The Story of the Match
ARSENAL won 1-0 against West Ham United as Leandro Trossard's close-range right-footed finish, set up by the influential Martin Odegaard, settled a tight London derby in the 83rd minute in front of a capacity crowd of over 60,000 at the London Stadium. It was Trossard's first goal of 2026 and it has surely handed Arsenal a firm grip on the Premier League title. The Belgian's celebration said everything as his teammates mobbed him, knowing exactly what was at stake.
West Ham United scored deep into stoppage time when substitute Callum Wilson tucked home, only for VAR to disallow the effort for a foul on David Raya. It was a crushing blow for the Hammers who now sit in genuine relegation danger. Should Tottenham Hotspur beat Leeds United on Monday night, West Ham find themselves looking over the edge.
Arsenal's Mikel Arteta brought a side flying on confidence, having just dispatched Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-final. They came into the contest two points ahead of Manchester City. The Gunners wore their cream change strip with claret shorts and socks - an irony not lost on the home supporters - and started brightly in East London.
Arsenal had won their previous two visits to the London Stadium 5-2 and 6-0. It was a cold afternoon in the capital and the visitors wasted little time imposing themselves. Trossard was denied twice in the 9th and 10th minutes, Mads Hermansen producing a fine save before the Belgian headed against the woodwork from an Arsenal corner. Both deliveries had the home crowd holding their breath.
Ricardo Calafiori fired wide from 22 yards in the 13th minute and then, after Wan-Bissaka fouled Trossard for a free kick, Declan Rice's delivery was met by Calafiori whose glancing header was cleared off the line by Mavropanos in the 22nd minute. West Ham had barely got out of their own half. Diouf provided some brief respite with a left-footed effort in the 27th minute before Arsenal suffered a blow of their own when Ben White limped off in the 28th minute, replaced by Martin Zubimendi. Rice dropped to right back, with Zubimendi moving straight into the engine room.
Taty Castellanos was yellow carded in the 34th minute for a foul on the Spaniard. Arsenal's free kick from Eberechi Eze was blocked by the wall. The home side grew into the game and Summerville was booked in the 38th minute after clashing with Gabriel at full pace. The Hammers came closest to a first-half breakthrough in the 45th minute when Castellanos powered a header from Wan-Bissaka's cross onto Raya's gloves. A fine save from the Spaniard kept things level heading into the break.
Arteta made an immediate change at half time, replacing Calafiori with Cristian Mosquera, allowing Rice to return to midfield. West Ham began to grow in the second half and both Castellanos and Bowen found themselves stopped by Arsenal in the 49th minute. Saka, Arsenal's captain for the night, twice went close, firing high in the 52nd and 58th minutes, while Bowen's shot from outside the area was blocked in the 65th minute.
Arteta made the decisive call in the 67th minute, sending on Odegaard and Havertz for Eze and Zubimendi. It was a move that transformed the game. Todibo was immediately carded for a foul on the Norwegian captain. West Ham responded, pushing forward as both sides went in search of a winner. Raya made a superb stop from Mateus Fernandes in the 78th minute, his best moment of the afternoon, before Saka was booked and replaced by Noni Madueke.
Then came the moment that may define Arsenal's season. In the 83rd minute, Odegaard found Trossard in close range and the Belgian buried his finish to make it 0-1. The Gunners saw out the remaining minutes and Wilson's disallowed goal in the fifth minute of added time was the final heartbreak for the Hammers.
Arsenal have won the Premier League double over West Ham twelve times previously, with only Manchester United doing so more against any single opponent. West Ham had been unbeaten at London Stadium in their last six home league fixtures. That run is now over.
It was 46 years ago that West Ham beat Arsenal 1-0 in the FA Cup Final at Wembley thanks to Trevor Brooking's famous header - the great man was present at the London Stadium today to reflect on that 1980 glory. But there was to be no fairytale repeat.
Arsenal's Viktor Gyokeres has scored nine goals in his last twelve Premier League appearances - the most of any player since late January - at a conversion rate of 47%, compared to just 15% across his first 21 matches. Jarrod Bowen has seven home assists across his last six league appearances for West Ham, equalling his total home assists for the season. Only Paolo Di Canio (nine in 1999-00) and Eyal Berkovic (eight in both 1997-98 and 1998-99) have assisted more home goals in a Hammers season.
The Premier League title is surely heading to North London. Arsenal now have two games remaining against Burnley at home and Crystal Palace away; City have three left against Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Aston Villa. That five-point gap may prove insurmountable.
