The Story of the Match

WEST HAM UNITED recorded back-to-back wins in style at home in the Premier League for the first time since October 2024 as they came from behind to beat Burnley 3-2 at the London Stadium in front of 62,449 fans.

The home side came into the match off the back of a 3-1 home win over Newcastle United last time out, and three defeats against Leeds United (away) 1-2, Brentford (home) 0-2 and Arsenal (away) 0-2. Burnley arrived off the back of a 0-2 home defeat to Arsenal last time out, two wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers (away) 3-2 and Leeds United (home) 2-0, and an away loss to Aston Villa 1-2.

West Ham United fans stood to observe a minute's silence in their Remembrance Tribute ahead of Remembrance Sunday prior to kick off, which was observed impeccably by both sets of fans. The London Stadium is normally quiet and subdued of late but after the unexpected win over Newcastle United last week the Hammers fans were back at their noisy best with the side seeking two home wins on the bounce. The last time the Hammers won two back-to-back home games in the Premier League was against Manchester United and Ipswich Town in October 2024, a run they equalled by the end of today's encounter with the Clarets.

West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo started with a 4-3-3 formation with Alphonse Areola in goal, then a back four of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo and El Hadji Malick Diouf, a midfield three of Matheus Fernandes, Freddie Potts and Lucas Paqueta, and three attackers in captain Jarrod Bowen, Callum Wilson and Crysencio Summerville up front.

Burnley manager Scott Parker started with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Martin Dubravka in goal, then a back four of Kyle Walker, Axel Tuanzebe, Maxime Esteve and Quilindschy Hartman, a two-man midfield of Florentino and captain Josh Cullen, then a three of Lesley Ugochukwu, Loum Tchaouna and Jaidon Anthony with Zian Flemming up top.

The Hammers started well and oozed class in the opening exchanges with Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen causing the Burnley defence trouble. Burnley did not let West Ham have it all their own way as Jaidon Anthony and Zian Flemming almost caused problems for Alphonse Areola in the 15th minute after building down the left flank, but the chance went begging. West Ham United under Nuno Espirito Santo at home seem to sit back and let away teams come onto them and then play on a fast counterattack when they win the ball back through Bowen, Paqueta and Summerville.

Burnley opened the scoring through Zian Flemming with a close-range header from an assist by Loum Tchaouna in the 35th minute to give the Clarets the lead. The goal was awarded after a VAR decision for an earlier offside in the buildup play. The Burnley build up would have pleased boss Scott Parker, a former Hammer himself who was a cultured midfielder during his time at the Boleyn Ground.

West Ham United came back strongly after falling behind, but captain Jarrod Bowen's left-footed shot from outside the penalty area from an assist by Callum Wilson was blocked in the 37th minute. The Hammers continued to press and with the next attack Max Kilman saw a solid header blocked after an assist from Freddie Potts in the 38th minute.

West Ham United finally equalised through a Callum Wilson close-range header following a corner in the 44th minute. It was checked for offside by VAR and subsequently given by referee Michael Salisbury to level the scores at 1-1. Wilson had now scored seven goals in his last five starts against the Clarets, and had also scored in six of his last eight starts against newly promoted teams. The teams went in level at the interval at 1-1.

Flemming went close with a header in the 58th minute which went just over Alphonse Areola's crossbar as the visitors looked to regain the lead. Freddie Potts, who looked particularly good but started to tire, was replaced by stalwart midfielder Tomas Soucek in the 61st minute. He made an immediate impact with a goal and a part in the third.

Jarrod Bowen saw a left-footed shot from inside the penalty area saved by Martin Dubravka in the 75th minute as the home side came forward in search of a winner. Then in the 77th minute from a corner West Ham United went ahead through a close-range tap in from Tomas Soucek after Martin Dubravka could only parry a left-footed shot by Lucas Paqueta into his path, and he stabbed the ball home to make it 2-1 and send the Hammers faithful into raptures.

West Ham United weren't finished as late substitute Kyle Walker-Peters tapped in from close range after a long-range shot by Tomas Soucek was charged down by Martin Dubravka into his path, and Walker-Peters made no mistake to make it 3-1.

In the seventh minute of added time Josh Cullen scored for Burnley to make it 3-2 and set up a tense finish for the Hammers, but they hung on to win a five-goal thriller. The win saw West Ham United go into the international break on 10 points in 18th place, with Burnley above them in 17th on 10 points but with a better goal difference.
