The Story of the Match

CRYSTAL PALACE were held to a 0-0 draw by West Ham United in an important London derby in the Monday Night Premier League football offering which was an important game for the Hammers after the Tottenham Hotspur result on Saturday against Brighton & Hove Albion which ended in a 2-2 draw. West Ham United were the better side in the first half but the longer the game went on Crystal Palace were the better team, and the draw was the right result on the night, played in front of a crowd of 24,974 fans. It was a clean sheet for the Hammers again but it was confirmed that Wolverhampton Wanderers were relegated as a result of West Ham United gaining a point.

It was two points dropped by the Hammers which would have helped Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur. Wolverhampton Wanderers play Tottenham Hotspur first and then West Ham United host Everton with former Hammers boss David Moyes next.

Crystal Palace had won five of their last seven Premier League games against West Ham United (drawn one, lost one), and were looking to win three consecutive league games against West Ham United for the first time. Crystal Palace have picked up thirteen points in their last seven Premier League games (won four, drawn one, lost two), having gone nine games winless beforehand (drawn three, lost six).

Crystal Palace had won one of their last eight home Premier League London derbies (drawn two, lost five), while in the last two seasons, only West Ham United (four) had won fewer points in home London derbies in the Premier League than Crystal Palace (eight). Crystal Palace had won their last two Premier League matches when going 1-0 down, beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 in March at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Newcastle United at Selhurst Park 2-1 in April 2026.

The Eagles had only won two of their previous twenty eight matches when conceding first beforehand (drawn nine, lost seventeen). Crystal Palace, meanwhile, had won just three of their last twenty five Monday night games in the Premier League (drawn ten, lost twelve). Jean-Philippe Mateta's two goals against Newcastle United earlier in April 2026 took him to forty eight Premier League goals for Crystal Palace, with Wilfried Zaha (sixty eight) the only previous Crystal Palace player to net over fifty goals in the Premier League for the South London club. The brace took him to thirty seven goals in seventy five games under Oliver Glasner, the outright most by an Eagles player under one manager in the Premier League.

Another Crystal Palace favourite Wilfried Zaha scored thirty five goals in one hundred and thirty four matches under Roy Hodgson, who is now managing again at Bristol City.

Crystal Palace came into the match off the back of three wins against Newcastle United (home) 2-1, Fiorentina in the UEFA Conference League (home) 3-0, and AEK Larnaca in the UEFA Conference League (away) 2-1, two draws against Leeds United (home) 0-0 and AEK Larnaca in the UEFA Conference League (home) 0-0, and one defeat against Fiorentina in the UEFA Conference League (away) 1-2.

West Ham United had won three of their last five Premier League away games against Crystal Palace (lost two), scoring at least twice in all five of those matches. West Ham United had won five of their last eleven Premier League matches (drawn three, lost three) - in that period (17th January onwards), only four teams had picked up more points than West Ham United, while only four had scored more goals.

West Ham United were winless in their last five Monday night games in the Premier League (drawn two, lost three), having won ten of their previous twelve beforehand. West Ham United came into the game off the back of one win against Wolverhampton Wanderers (home) 4-0 in their last match, three draws against Leeds United in the FA Cup Quarter Final (home) 2-2 (lost on penalties), Manchester City (home) 1-1 and Brentford in the FA Cup 5th Round (home) 2-2 (won on penalties), and one defeat against Aston Villa (away) 0-2.

Four of West Ham United's last seven Premier League goals had come via corners, with three of those scored by Konstantinos Mavropanos. The Greek central defender had only scored one goal in his first eighty one appearances for Arsenal and the Hammers before this run of three in three. In 2026 so far, only Bruno Fernandes (ten) had more Premier League assists than West Ham's Jarrod Bowen (seven in thirteen games). Bowen had also scored in each of his last two league games against Crystal Palace.

Oliver Glasner's Crystal Palace started with a 3-4-3 formation with captain Dean Henderson in goal, then a back three of Chris Richards, Maxence Lacroix and Jaydee Canvot, then a four-man midfield of Daniel Munoz, Jefferson Lerma, Matt Hughes and Tyrick Mitchell, then three attackers in Brennan Johnson, Jorgen Strand Larsen and Yeremy Pino up front.

Nuno Espirito Santo's West Ham United started with a 4-4-1-1 formation with Mads Hermansen in goal, then a back four of Kyle Walker-Peters, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Axel Disasi and El Hadij Malick Diouf, then a four-man midfield of captain Jarrod Bowen, Mateus Fernandes, Tomas Soucek and Crysencio Summerville, then Pablo behind loan striker Taty Castellanos leading the line.

West Ham United kicked off the first half. The Hammers fans were packed into the Arthur Waite Stand. The early exchanges were even with both sides trying to get a foothold in the game. Crystal Palace started to make an impression after a quarter of an hour with Will Hughes running the middle of the park alongside Jefferson Lerma and Daniel Munoz.

The Hammers came forward through Taty Castellanos in the 14th minute but his right-footed shot went high and wide of the target. Brennan Johnson was yellow carded in the 21st minute by referee Darren England. West Ham United had a free kick in the 24th minute from a dangerous position that was safely gathered by captain Dean Henderson after heavy Hammers pressure.

Crystal Palace went close to opening the scoring in the 27th minute when Brennan Johnson saw a right-footed shot from 22 yards go narrowly wide, although it should have been a corner as it came off a West Ham United defender. Crysencio Summerville saw a right-footed shot blocked by Chris Richards in the 28th minute as the Hammers came forward on a fast counter-attack. West Ham United had a corner in the 31st minute taken by Jarrod Bowen to the centre of the box, headed out by Richards. Daniel Munoz on the left side found it difficult to press when the home side made fast counter-attacks.

West Ham United had a corner in the 43rd minute that came to nothing, but in the follow-up play Konstantinos Mavropanos had a header on target that Henderson saved magnificently from six yards in the 44th minute. In the 45th minute Tyrick Mitchell flashed a left-footed shot wide of the target. The teams went in level at the interval 0-0, though West Ham United had edged it, with Taty Castellanos' scissor kick in the 39th minute and Brennan Johnson's effort in the 27th minute going the closest to opening the scoring in a tense London derby.

Crystal Palace kicked off the second half. In the 52nd minute Jarrod Bowen had a solid shot blocked by Will Hughes. This was the 315th Premier League game in which Crystal Palace had failed to score a goal in the first half of a match. Little changed in the play for either side. Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner made a treble substitution in the 59th minute with Will Hughes, Yeremy Pino and Jorgen Strand Larsen replaced by Kamada, Ismaila Sarr and Jean-Philippe Mateta.

West Ham United had little momentum in the second half. Crystal Palace were in total control and looked the more likely to score. The Hammers needed to make a change and Nuno Espirito Santo made his first substitution with Pablo replaced by Callum Wilson in the 75th minute.

Crystal Palace replaced Brennan Johnson with Justin Devenny in the 78th minute. Ismaila Sarr scored in the 83rd minute with a hooked shot rifled home, but it was disallowed after an assist by Jean-Philippe Mateta. West Ham United replaced Taty Castellanos with Mohamadou Kante in the 84th minute as the Hammers striker tired. Daniel Munoz and El Hadij Malick Diouf were both yellow carded in the 90th plus 2nd minute.

It was a scrappy second half so the 0-0 score was the right result on the night. West Ham United ended the night two points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur. The Hammers seemed content with the point but it was two points dropped by Crystal Palace, who were the better team overall on the night. Jarrod Bowen was quiet throughout. It was a clean sheet for the Hammers again and it was confirmed that Wolverhampton Wanderers were relegated as West Ham United took a point.

  • Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace) - Commanding throughout and produced a superb reflex save from Mavropanos in the 44th minute that proved crucial in keeping the scoreline level; led his defence with authority all night
  • Will Hughes (Crystal Palace) - Controlled the midfield in the first half alongside Lerma and Munoz, winning the ball and driving forward with purpose before being withdrawn at the break of the second half
  • Konstantinos Mavropanos (West Ham United) - Dominant in the air and composed in possession at the back; his header in the 44th minute deserved a goal and he kept Strand Larsen and Johnson quiet for the most part
