Inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Champions League night — Spurs vs Atletico Madrid

The Story of the Match

Tottenham Hotspur won 3-2 on the night against Atletico Madrid at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in front of 49,598 fans on the warmest day of the year so far. It was Igor Tudor's first win as Spurs manager, but the North Londoners went out of the Champions League 5-7 on aggregate against a far better side over the two legs.

Spurs came into the match in dreadful form — one draw against Liverpool (away) 1-1 and four defeats: Atletico Madrid (away) Champions League Last 16 1st leg 2-5, Crystal Palace (home) 1-3, Fulham (away) 1-2, and Arsenal (home) 1-4. Atletico Madrid arrived in confident mood with four wins from their previous five: Getafe (home) 1-0, Tottenham (home) 5-2, Real Sociedad (home) 3-2 and Real Oviedo (away) 1-0, with their only defeat coming against Barcelona (away) in the Copa del Rey 0-3.

This was probably the last Champions League encounter at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for some time, with Spurs unlikely to achieve European qualification next season and genuinely at risk of relegation from the Premier League if their form does not improve — a scenario that could cost the club an estimated £250m to £300m.

Tudor started with a 5-4-1 formation: Guglielmo Vicario in goal behind a back five of Pedro Porro, captain Cristian Romero, Radu Dragusin, Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence, with Xavi Simons, Pape Sarr, Archie Gray and Mathys Tel across midfield and Randal Kolo Muani as the lone striker. Diego Simeone matched up with a 4-4-2: Juan Musso in goal, Nahuel Molina, Robin Le Normand, Dávid Hancko and Matteo Ruggeri across the back, Giuliano Simone, Marcos Llorente, Johnny Cardozo and Ademola Lookman in midfield, with captain Antoine Griezmann and Julián Alvarez as the front two.

Spurs kicked off and Atletico thought they had taken an early lead when Ademola Lookman struck from close range in the 6th minute from a Giuliano Simone assist, but VAR ruled it out for offside. Mathys Tel had Spurs' first chance in the 10th minute, his right-footed shot from the edge of the area saved easily by Musso. The crowd on the upper decks was sparse — a worrying sight that could become commonplace if the club were to drop into the Championship.

Tel continued to threaten. In the 22nd minute, after a long throw-in by Dragusin, the loose ball fell to Tel inside the penalty area and he fired a powerful left-footed shot low on target, well saved by Musso. Two minutes later Tel piled into the area again down the left, only for Musso to push his effort away for a corner. Ruggeri was booked in the 28th minute for a challenge on Tel.

Tottenham took the lead in the 30th minute through a solid back-post header by Randal Kolo Muani from an assist by Xavi Simons. The stadium erupted as hopes of a historic European comeback flickered into life. Spurs were electric after the opener — Griezmann's 34th-minute free kick came to nothing, and Tel missed a gilt-edged chance to make it 2-0 in the 35th minute when Musso produced a magnificent save from eight yards. In the 43rd minute another right-footed shot from 20 yards was saved by Musso at full stretch. Atletico threatened late in the half through Alvarez and Simone, but Vicario held firm. Spurs led 1-0 at the break, trailing 3-5 on aggregate.

Atletico kicked off the second half and equalised almost immediately. Julián Alvarez fired a right-footed shot from the centre of the penalty area into the top left corner in the 47th minute from an Ademola Lookman assist, a fast break that caught the Spurs defence napping. But Spurs responded quickly — Xavi Simons made it 2-1 in the 52nd minute with a beautiful right-footed strike from outside the penalty area into the bottom right corner, assisted by young Archie Gray.

The yellow cards started flying — Lookman, Porro and Vicario all booked inside two minutes around the hour mark. Simeone introduced Sorloth for Lookman and Koke for Molina. Tudor brought on Udogie for Dragusin in the 66th minute. Romero was cautioned in the 70th minute, followed by Udogie two minutes later.

Dávid Hancko levelled it at 2-2 in the 75th minute, heading home from the left side of the six-yard box from a corner, assisted by Alvarez. Tudor replaced Porro with Bergvall. Both sides used their full allocation of substitutions as tired legs were replaced — Tudor bringing on Danso, Gallagher and Olusesi in the 81st minute, Simeone introducing Baena and Gonzalez for Griezmann and Alvarez in the 84th minute.

The winning goal came in the 90th minute to the delight of Tudor and the Spurs faithful. Xavi Simons was fouled by José María Giménez inside the penalty area and stepped up himself, converting with a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner to seal a deserved 3-2 victory.

Spurs fans left N17 with a fifth home Champions League victory this term — 13 goals scored and just 2 conceded in those five matches. But it was the club's last Champions League game at this stadium for the foreseeable future. Atletico Madrid now face Barcelona over two legs in the quarter-finals. Tottenham host Nottingham Forest on Sunday in a crucial relegation encounter, and this win will give Tudor and his players hope for that vital fixture.

Author's Standout Players

  • Xavi Simons — The star of the night with two goals including the match-winning penalty. His strike from outside the box in the 52nd minute was a moment of genuine quality. Ran the game from midfield.
  • Mathys Tel — Tireless down the left flank, constantly threatening Musso's goal. Should have scored at least once but was denied by two magnificent saves. Created the space and energy that underpinned Spurs' performance.
  • Julián Alvarez — Scored and assisted on the night, taking his Champions League tally this season to ten goal involvements (seven goals, three assists) — the most ever by an Atletico Madrid player in a single campaign.
  • Juan Musso — Made several outstanding saves to keep Atletico in the tie, particularly denying Tel twice from close range in the first half.

  • Spurs had won all four home Champions League games this season, scoring 10 and conceding 0.
  • Atletico scored 29 goals in their 11 Champions League games this season — their most in a single campaign.
  • Archie Gray made his seventh Champions League start for Spurs, the most by a player aged under 21 in the club's history, surpassing Dele Alli's record of six.
