TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR beat Charlton Athletic 5-1 in a London derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last night in front of a crowd of 49,008 in this Carabao Cup second round tie. Spurs eased into the next round with an accomplished performance thanks to goals from Mikey Moore in the 41st minute with a solid left-footed finish, Dominic Solanke with a right-footed shot in the 45th minute, and Kevin Danso, who added a third with a header from a corner in the 67th minute with his first touch after coming off the bench. Spurs were not finished, as new signing Savio marked his debut with a fourth after a lovely dribble in the 82nd minute, assisted by Archie Gray, before Savio's left-footed shot went in off a Ben Davies deflection to make it 5-0 and seal a place in the third round draw. Charlton Athletic pulled a goal back through Lloyd Jones, his third in three games, with a header to make it 5-1 in the 87th minute.
Tottenham Hotspur came into the match off the back of a heavy Premier League opening day defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, 3-0 on Saturday evening. Pre-season for Spurs saw mixed results, with wins against Hoffenheim 3-0 and Chelsea 2-1 and draws with Hoffenheim 1-1 and Getafe 1-1.
Charlton Athletic came into the game off the back of three wins, against Cheltenham Town 3-1 in the first round of the Carabao Cup away at Whaddon Road, a home win over Derby County 2-1 at the Valley, and a rare win away at West Ham United 2-1 at the London Stadium last time out. In pre-season they beat Colchester United 2-1.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi started with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Antonin Kinsky in goal, then a back four of captain Archie Gray, Jan Paul van Hecke, Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies, then two holding midfielders in Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall, with three attacking midfielders in Mikey Moore, Matheus Fernandes and Mathys Tel, and Dominic Solanke up front.
Tottenham Hotspur made five changes from the side beaten by Brentford, with Destiny Udogie, Matheus Fernandes, Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur and Ben Davies coming in for Marcos Senesi, Sandro Tonali, Conor Gallagher, Andy Robertson and Richarlison.

Charlton Athletic kicked off the first half in a change strip of all purple. Tottenham Hotspur took the game to the Valiants and forced a corner in the 8th minute, taken by Matheus Fernandes but comfortably collected by Tiernan Brooks.
Charlton Athletic were forced into an early double substitution in the 15th minute, with both centre halves changed as Collins Sichenje was replaced by Danny McNamara and Billy Koumetio by Lloyd Jones.
In the 24th minute Lucas Bergvall was booked for a foul on Rob Apter, and from the free kick Charlton forced a corner that was headed away by Jan Paul van Hecke. In the 26th minute a firm right-footed shot by Greg Docherty was tipped away at full stretch for a corner by Antonin Kinsky, and from the set piece Nathan Asiimwe headed narrowly wide at the far post a minute later. Spurs then had spells of pressure of their own, Matheus Fernandes forcing corners in the 29th minute and Archie Gray seeing a right-footed shot from inside the area parried by Brooks.
Tottenham Hotspur began to tick in midfield and forced Charlton Athletic onto the back foot, with Lucas Bergvall, Matheus Fernandes and Rodrigo Bentancur running the show and giving Dominic Solanke space to run into. Spurs' first real shot on goal came in the 38th minute when Matheus Fernandes struck a lovely right-footed effort that was well saved by Tiernan Brooks.
Tottenham Hotspur took a deserved lead in the 41st minute when Mikey Moore fired home from inside the area with a nice left-footed finish past Brooks, assisted by Rodrigo Bentancur. Rob Apter was booked in first-half stoppage time, and moments later Spurs made it 2-0 when Dominic Solanke fired home with a right-footed shot from inside the box, set up by Mikey Moore.
Tottenham Hotspur led 2-0 at the interval and started the second half exactly as they had finished the first, attacking the Charlton Athletic goal. Spurs forced further corners in the 48th and 55th minutes, which the Valiants defended, and it looked only a matter of time before the lead was extended.
Roberto De Zerbi made a triple change in the 64th and 65th minutes, with Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro and Kevin Danso coming on for Jan Paul van Hecke, Destiny Udogie and Rodrigo Bentancur. Charlton Athletic responded in the 66th minute with Joe Rankin-Costello, Alan Mwamba and Miles Leaburn replacing Millenic Alli, Timothy Ouma and Harvey Knibbs.
Tottenham Hotspur went further ahead in the 67th minute as Kevin Danso headed in from a Matheus Fernandes corner with his first touch after coming on to make it 3-0. Spurs handed a debut to new signing Savio in the 71st minute in place of Dominic Solanke.
Savio marked his debut in the 82nd minute, cutting inside after a lovely dribble and finishing with his left foot for 4-0, assisted by Archie Gray. Three minutes later Savio was involved again, his left-footed shot deflecting in off Ben Davies to make it 5-0 and seal a comfortable win.
Charlton Athletic grabbed a consolation in the 87th minute through Lloyd Jones, who headed home his third goal in three games to make the final score 5-1.
