The Story of the Match

CHELSEA continued Tottenham Hotspur's poor record at Stamford Bridge in the last Premier League home match of the season as the visitors from North London were defeated again in South-West London, this time 2-1 in front of 39,463 fans in London SW6. Tottenham Hotspur's fight to remain in the Premier League now goes to the final Sunday of the 38-game season against Everton, with a two-point advantage over West Ham United, who host Leeds United needing a win and Spurs to lose for them to stay up. A draw for Spurs and a win for the Hammers would then send West Ham down on a poorer goal difference.

The night was further ruined for Spurs as their North London rivals Arsenal were crowned Premier League champions without playing, as Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw by AFC Bournemouth on the south coast at the Vitality Stadium in the other key game of the evening.

The goals for Chelsea came from Enzo Fernandez in the 18th minute with a right-footed shot from an assist by Pedro Neto to make it 1-0, and then after the break Andrey Santos added a second with a left-footed shot from an assist by Enzo Fernandez in the 67th minute. Both Chelsea goals resulted from Spurs errors. Tottenham Hotspur pulled a goal back through Richarlison with a right-footed shot from an assist by Pape Sarr in the 74th minute to make it 2-1, but by then the home side knew they were going to sign off a poor season as World Club Champions with a home win against their London rivals.

Chelsea came into the game in poor form with one win against Leeds United in the Emirates FA Cup Semi-Final at Wembley (1-0), one draw against Liverpool away (1-1) and three defeats against Brighton and Hove Albion away (0-3), Nottingham Forest at home (1-3) and Manchester City in the Emirates FA Cup Final at Wembley (0-1) last time out. Tottenham Hotspur were remarkably in better form with two wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers away (1-0) and Aston Villa away (2-1), two draws against Brighton and Hove Albion at home (2-2) and Leeds United at home (1-1) last time out, and a single defeat against Sunderland away (0-1).

Chelsea had won 38 Premier League games against Tottenham Hotspur, the most they had beaten an opponent in the competition, while Tottenham Hotspur had only lost more against Manchester United (forty times). Tottenham Hotspur had won just one of their last thirty-five away league games against Chelsea (drawn eleven, lost twenty-three), a 3-1 win in April 2018 under Mauricio Pochettino. Chelsea had won their last five league games against Tottenham Hotspur, only winning more in a row against them between January 2000 and March 2002 (six times).

Chelsea had not lost their final home league game in any of the last 23 seasons (won sixteen, drawn seven), since a 3-1 loss to Aston Villa in 2001-02. Having won their final away league game in four consecutive seasons between 2020-21 and 2023-24, Tottenham Hotspur lost 2-0 at Aston Villa in their last game on the road last season. Chelsea were winless in their last seven Premier League games (drawn one, lost six), last having a longer run between December 1994 and February 1995 (ten games without a win). Chelsea had lost each of their last four Premier League home games, having never lost five in a row at Stamford Bridge in their league history.

Tottenham Hotspur had won their last two Premier League away games, last winning more consecutively between September and November 2020 (four times). Tottenham Hotspur had taken as many points from their last four Premier League games (8, won two, lost two) as they had in their previous seventeen combined (won one, drawn five, lost eleven). They had conceded only one goal in the opening 45 minutes of their five games under Roberto De Zerbi, having conceded in the first half in each of their previous eleven.

Joao Pedro had been involved in four goals in his two Premier League starts against Tottenham Hotspur (three goals, one assist), netting Chelsea's winner at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the reverse fixture earlier this season, but was not in the side.

Chelsea manager Calum McFarlane started with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Robert Sanchez in goal, a back four of Josh Acheampong, Wesley Fofana, Jorrel Hato and Marc Cucurella, two defensive midfielders in Andrey Santos and Moises Caicedo, three attacking midfielders in Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer and captain Enzo Fernandez, and Liam Delap up front.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi started with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Antonin Kinsky in goal, a back four of Pedro Porro, Kevin Danso, captain Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie, then Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur, three attacking midfielders in Randal Kolo Muani, Conor Gallagher and Mathys Tel, and Richarlison up front. Tottenham Hotspur were unchanged from their last match against Leeds United.

Tottenham Hotspur started confidently enough, with Mathys Tel heading onto a post after meeting a Pedro Porro cross at the back post. Chelsea then went ahead through an Enzo Fernandez right-footed shot after he picked up the ball 25 yards or so from goal in the 18th minute from an assist by Pedro Neto to make it 1-0, the ball just out of Antonin Kinsky's reach in the visitors' goal.

The impressive Chelsea Argentinian almost made it two with a vicious angled free kick rattling the visitors' crossbar, while Cole Palmer, who had already stung the palms of Kinsky after playing a one-two with Jorrel Hato, clipped another shot just wide as the first half ended with Chelsea 1-0 up at the interval. After the break Andrey Santos added a second goal after Pedro Neto's cross to the back post was turned inside by man of the match Enzo Fernandez for Andrey Santos to put away in the 67th minute. Both Chelsea goals resulted from Spurs errors.

This fixture seldom ends well for Tottenham Hotspur and at 2-0 down it looked bad once again. It was as if they knew what was going to happen to them at Stamford Bridge with only a single win away in SW6. The ex-Chelsea player Conor Gallagher was booed throughout every time he went near the ball. Spurs were teased after every error by the Blues with chants of 'That's why you're going down!' ringing loudly around Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham Hotspur pulled a goal back through Richarlison with a close-range effort from an assist by Pape Sarr, with a snazzy back heel, in the 74th minute, after the midfielder had just come off the bench, to make it 2-1, but by then the home side knew they were going to sign off a poor season as World Club Champions with a home win against their relegation-troubled London rivals.

Jorrel Hato made a solid block to prevent James Maddison from stealing in for a late equaliser. The next corner raised the atmosphere as players jostled for space ahead of the kick and tempers began to flare. Tottenham Hotspur thought they had a penalty after Marc Cucurella was cautioned for fouling Micky van de Ven at a corner, but the ever hawk-eyed referee Stuart Attwell saw nothing much, and the visiting players' continued annoyance was further fuelled as Attwell had adjudged that the ball was not yet in play.

There were seven yellow cards dished out by Stuart Attwell, four for the Blues and three for Spurs. Chelsea used their full five substitutes with the visitors using only three, all eight changes for both teams coming between the 69th and 89th minutes as players tired. This London derby ended with Tottenham Hotspur pressing and hoping for an equaliser, but the miracle never came, and Chelsea fans yelled "Tottenham Hotspur, it's happened again" in the dying minutes to pour further misery on the fans from North London.

The relegation dog fight will be finalised in North and East London on Sunday at 4pm when Tottenham Hotspur in 17th host 12th-placed Everton, and West Ham United in 18th host 14th-placed Leeds United. Chelsea in 8th go to 10th-placed Sunderland in their last game before welcoming new boss Xabi Alonso for the 2026-27 season.

Author's Standout Players

  • Enzo Fernandez (Chelsea) - The man of the match and the difference between the sides, opening the scoring from 25 yards, rattling the crossbar with a free kick and then turning in Pedro Neto's cross for the second, a captain's performance to send the home fans home happy
  • Andrey Santos (Chelsea) - Industrious in midfield and clinical when it mattered, tucking away Chelsea's second to settle the contest after a busy afternoon shielding the back four
  • Pedro Neto (Chelsea) - A constant threat down the flank, supplying the assist for the opener and the cross that led to the second before making way late on
  • Richarlison (Tottenham Hotspur) - Led the line gamely on a difficult afternoon and gave Spurs hope with a smart close-range finish, though it proved too little against a determined Chelsea side
