The Story of the Match

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a result that leaves Roberto De Zerbi's side just two points clear of West Ham United in the Premier League relegation battle with two games remaining. A win would have given them a four-point cushion and all but secured their top-flight status. Instead, the anxiety continues deep into a long, nerve-shredding season.

Mathys Tel broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half, converting from inside the penalty area after Leeds only half-cleared a corner to send over 60,000 home fans into raptures. The lead lasted just 24 minutes. Tel fouled Ethan Ampadu inside the Spurs penalty area, catching him in the head, and after VAR reviewed the incident a penalty was awarded. Dominic Calvert-Lewin stepped up and fired home in the 74th minute to silence the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and drag the tie level.

Then came the late drama. Sean Longstaff, introduced in the 90th+3 minute, was twice denied by Antonin Kinsky in the dying moments - a brilliant stop in the 90th+8 and a missed gilt-edged chance at the back post a minute later. Two enormous moments for Spurs. Had either gone in, the consequences for Tottenham would have been severe. The home side also had a penalty appeal waved away in the 90th+13 minute after a VAR review, with only a corner awarded for a foul on James Maddison.

Tottenham had not won at home in the Premier League since the victory over Brentford back in December, and this performance underlined why. No team has picked up fewer home Premier League points this season than the eleven Spurs have accumulated, and they have now lost ten home league games for a second consecutive campaign. Only in 1991-92 had they lost more in a single season.

The first half was tight and tense, the atmosphere surprisingly muted for a game of such magnitude. Tottenham pressed and probed without finding a way through. Antonin Kinsky produced a brilliant save from Joe Rodon's header in the 21st minute to keep things level, while Pedro Porro's effort was cleared off the line by Pascal Struijk in the 33rd minute. Richarlison was denied by Karl Darlow in the 31st minute and Joao Palhinha fired just over from ten yards in the 36th minute as the home side created openings without the cutting edge to convert. The teams went in goalless at the break.

The second half began with more intent from Spurs and the goal duly arrived in the 50th minute. Tel swept a right-footed finish into the net after Leeds failed to deal with a corner delivery, and for a moment it seemed as though Tottenham had taken the decisive step towards safety. Richarlison should have doubled the lead in the 57th minute but fired wide from close range with Randal Kolo Muani's pass begging to be finished. It proved a costly miss.

Leeds, who had arrived at this fixture already safe following West Ham United's defeat to Arsenal the previous afternoon, were under no pressure of their own - but they showed the quality and organisation that has marked their return season to the top flight. Under Daniel Farke, they have been one of the most impressive newly promoted sides in recent memory, and they showed that character here. After Struijk was replaced by Sebastian Bornauw through injury in the 55th minute, Farke made a double substitution in the 62nd minute, sending on Lukas Nmecha and Wilfred Gnonto. The visitors grew stronger and their equaliser, when it came, was entirely deserved.

Joao Palhinha was yellow carded for a reckless challenge in the 66th minute, and Leeds continued to push for the leveller. The penalty incident in the 74th minute proved the turning point. Tel's challenge on Ampadu was clear enough once the VAR official had a look, and Calvert-Lewin sent Kinsky the wrong way to make it 1-1. Spurs became ragged thereafter, three yellow cards handed out in the final ten minutes to Rodon, Porro and ultimately De Zerbi himself in the 90th+5 minute.

Maddison and Djed Spence were introduced in the 85th minute as Spurs pushed for a winner in 13 minutes of added time. Longstaff's two late misses will haunt the Leeds camp briefly, but they mattered enormously for Tottenham. A home defeat tonight would have left the margin over West Ham at just a single point.

Tottenham Hotspur had won eight of their last nine Premier League meetings with Leeds United, including five in a row since a 3-1 defeat in May 2021. Leeds had now lost each of their last six visits to north London. Since the start of December 2025, only six sides have picked up more Premier League points than Leeds United's thirty-two, and only Manchester City, Manchester United and AFC Bournemouth have lost fewer games than Farke's side in that period.

No team has scored three or more goals in more Premier League matches this season among newly promoted sides than Leeds, who have done so eight times - the most by a promoted team since Leeds themselves managed ten times under Marcelo Bielsa in 2020-21, a record in a 38-game season. In their four games under De Zerbi, Tottenham Hotspur have won possession in the final third nearly five and a half times per game on average - the most of any manager with four or more games at a single Premier League club this season.

Noah Okafor, unused from the bench tonight, remains Leeds United's most lethal weapon: among players with 200 plus Premier League minutes since the start of February 2026, he has the best minutes per goal ratio, netting six goals in just 408 minutes. Richarlison, Spurs' primary striker, has scored or assisted every 109 minutes in the Premier League across the last three seasons.

Tottenham Hotspur now travel to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge before hosting Everton on the final day of the season. West Ham United face a trip to Newcastle United at St James' Park before welcoming Leeds United to the London Stadium on the last day. Leeds complete their own campaign at home to Brighton and Hove Albion at Elland Road before that trip east.

It is still all to play for. Nothing is ever easy for Spurs.

Author's Standout Players

  • Antonin Kinsky (Tottenham Hotspur) - The Czech goalkeeper was Spurs' man of the match in the truest sense. His early save from Rodon kept the scoreline level, and his two stops from Longstaff deep into added time were quite simply the reason Tottenham remain above the drop zone tonight. Without him this could have been a very different result.
  • Mathys Tel (Tottenham Hotspur) - Lively throughout and rewarded with the goal just after the hour. Worked hard on the right side of the attack, created corners and was a constant outlet. The penalty concession took the shine off his evening but his contribution before that moment was significant.
  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Leeds United) - Held the line all evening and converted from the spot with composure when the big moment arrived. His penalty was expertly taken and underlines the confidence running through a Leeds side that has had a remarkable first season back in the Premier League.
  • Ethan Ampadu (Leeds United) - The captain ran the midfield with intelligence and energy, and his willingness to press into dangerous areas drew the decisive foul from Tel for the penalty. Led by example throughout and was central to everything Leeds did going forward in the second half.
