The Story of the Match

MANCHESTER UNITED won narrowly to improve their chances of a Champions League place next season in the Premier League late-evening fixture against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in London SW6 on Saturday night, 1-0, thanks to the only goal of the game two minutes before half time. Manchester United opened the scoring in the 43rd minute through a Matheus Cunha crisp right-footed shot from inside the penalty area from an assist by captain Bruno Fernandes to make it 0-1, which sealed the victory for Michael Carrick's side.

Chelsea had lost just one of their last twelve Premier League home games against Manchester United (won six, drawn five), and were looking to win three in a row against them at Stamford Bridge for the first time since April 2006. Following their 2-1 win in September, Manchester United were looking to complete the Premier League double over Chelsea for just the second time after the 2019-20 campaign.

Chelsea against Manchester United has been drawn more often than any other fixture in Premier League history (twenty-seven times). Just seven of those twenty-seven draws have been 0-0, also making it the fixture with the most score draws in the competition (twenty).

Since the start of March, no side in Europe's big-five leagues had lost more games in all competitions than Chelsea coming into the weekend (six losses in the last nine games). Their previous six defeats had come over a period of twenty-nine games (won fifteen, drawn eight, lost six).

Chelsea had lost their last three Premier League matches. Only once this century had they lost four in a row, doing so in April to May 2023 under Frank Lampard. They had not lost four consecutive league games without scoring since February and March 1998, which included a home defeat to Manchester United.

Chelsea came into the match off the back of a single win against Port Vale in the FA Cup sixth round at home (7-0) and four defeats against Newcastle United at home (0-1), Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League Last 16 second leg at home (0-3), Everton away (0-3) and Manchester City at home (0-3).

Manchester United had lost two of their last four league games (won one, drawn one), after losing just two of their previous twenty-two beforehand (won twelve, drawn eight). They were one of just two clubs yet to suffer back-to-back Premier League defeats in 2025-26, the other being league leaders Arsenal.

Manchester United had kept just one clean sheet in their last twenty-one away Premier League matches, while their last two away clean sheets in the league had come against sides managed by former United managers, 3-0 at Ruud van Nistelrooy's Leicester City in March 2025 and 1-0 at David Moyes' Everton in February 2026.

Bruno Fernandes had assisted Casemiro six times in the Premier League this season, the joint-most by a Manchester United player to a single teammate in a campaign in the competition, equalling Bruno Fernandes to Marcus Rashford in 2022-23.

Manchester United came into the match off the back of two wins against Crystal Palace at home (2-1) and Aston Villa at home (3-1), a draw against AFC Bournemouth away (2-2), and two defeats against Newcastle United away (1-2) and Leeds United at home (1-2) last time out.

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior started with a 4-2-3-1 line-up with Robert Sanchez in goal, a back four of Malo Gusto, Wesley Fofana, Jorrel Hato and Marc Cucurella, two holding midfielders in Enzo Fernandez and captain Moises Caicedo, three attacking midfielders in Estevao, Cole Palmer and Pedro Neto, and Liam Delap up front.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick started with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Senne Lammens in goal, a back four of Noussair Mazraoui, Diogo Dalot, Ayden Heaven and Luke Shaw, two holding midfielders in Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo, three attacking midfielders in Bryan Mbeumo, captain Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko as the loan striker up top.

Manchester United started well and took the early play to Chelsea. Chelsea forced a corner in the fourth minute after Delap got into the Manchester United penalty area unchallenged. Estevao saw a left-footed shot from the edge of the United penalty area go narrowly wide of the far post in the 12th minute as Chelsea pressed for an opening goal. Chelsea replaced Estevao with Garnacho in the 16th minute due to injury.

A Manchester United free kick by Bruno Fernandes into the Chelsea penalty area was headed clear by Wesley Fofana in the 22nd minute after right back Dalot was fouled. Matheus Cunha was yellow carded for a heavy challenge on Hato in the 25th minute. A Chelsea free kick in the 30th minute by Enzo Fernandez was blocked by the Manchester United defensive wall.

Enzo Fernandez shot wide with a curling right-footed effort from ten yards out in the 32nd minute, which was the Blues' best chance. Hato was yellow carded in the 39th minute for a foul on Mbeumo.

Manchester United opened the scoring in the 43rd minute through a Matheus Cunha right-footed shot from inside the penalty area from an assist by Bruno Fernandes to make it 0-1. The teams went in at the interval with neither side taking a firm grasp of the game.

Neither team made any substitutions at half time. Manchester United came forward on the counter attack in the 52nd minute with Bruno Fernandes' left-footed shot going just wide from the edge of the Chelsea penalty area.

Chelsea came on strong in the 56th minute when Pedro Neto's cross was headed against the crossbar by Liam Delap. Malo Gusto crossed into the United penalty area in the 62nd minute but Cole Palmer's left-footed shot went wide. Manchester United went close to a second goal after a fast counter attack in the 65th minute, but Bruno Fernandes' shot was tipped away by Robert Sanchez for a corner. The resultant corner came to nothing.

A Chelsea free kick in the 70th minute after Marc Cucurella was fouled saw Cole Palmer take it left-footed, but it struck the wall and so did the follow-up. Chelsea plundered Manchester United with chances but nothing could penetrate the visitors' defence.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick brought on Mason Mount and Amad Diallo for Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha in the 80th and 81st minutes respectively. Chelsea replaced Malo Gusto with Josh Acheampong and Wesley Fofana with Trevor Chalobah in central defence in the 81st minute. Enzo Fernandez was replaced by Romeo Lavia in the 88th minute as he tired having returned from suspension.

The match remained end to end but neither side could score in the time remaining. Manchester United improved their Champions League chances with the win in London.

Author's Standout Players

  • Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) - Pulled the strings in midfield throughout, providing the assist for the decisive goal and constantly threatening on the counter, his quality the difference between the sides
  • Matheus Cunha (Manchester United) - Energetic and direct all evening, his clinical finish two minutes before the break proved the winner, though he was fortunate not to receive a second yellow card
  • Cole Palmer (Chelsea) - Chelsea's most creative player, working hard to find openings in a disciplined United backline, but ultimately unable to provide the decisive moment his team needed
  • Robert Sanchez (Chelsea) - Made a fine save to deny Bruno Fernandes in the second half, kept Chelsea in the game when United threatened to double their lead
