The Story of the Match

Chelsea were taught a severe Champions League lesson as Paris Saint-Germain won 3-0 — 8-2 on aggregate — in front of 35,811 fans at Stamford Bridge. The French giants showed why they are the current defending Champions League holders, oozing class as the Chelsea faithful could only remember past great European nights in SW6 while the Parisian juggernaut rolled them over with ease to reach the last eight. Goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Bradley Barcola and half-time substitute Senny Mayulu completed the aggregate rout as Chelsea were dumped out of Europe by the classy current holders.

Earlier in the day, Chelsea had received a fine and been given a suspended transfer ban over £47m in secret payments. The Blues came into the match on the back of three consecutive losses — Newcastle United (home) 0-1, PSG (away) in the Champions League Last 16 1st leg 2-5, and Arsenal (away) 1-2 — before wins against Wrexham (away) in the FA Cup 5th Round 4-2 and Aston Villa (away) 4-1. Paris Saint-Germain arrived in confident form with three wins from their previous five: Chelsea (home) 5-2, Le Havre (away) 1-0 and Metz (home) 3-0, a draw against Monaco (home) 2-2, and a single loss to Monaco (home) 1-3.

Chelsea were winless in their last five UEFA Champions League games against PSG (two draws, three defeats) — their joint-longest winless run against any opponent in the competition, matching a five-game streak against Bayern Munich between April 2005 and September 2025. PSG were unbeaten in their last five against English opponents in the Champions League (four wins, one draw), and were looking to progress from their fourth consecutive knockout tie against English opposition, having previously eliminated Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal last season.

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior started with a 4-2-3-1 formation: Robert Sanchez in goal behind a back four of Trevoh Chalobah, Mamadou Sarr, Jorrel Hato and Marc Cucurella, with Andres Santos and Moises Caicedo as the holding pair, Cole Palmer, captain Enzo Fernandez and Pedro Neto in the attacking midfield trident, and Joao Pedro as the lone striker. Luis Enrique matched up with a 4-3-3: Matvei Safonov in goal, Achraf Hakimi, captain Marquinhos, Willian Pacho and Nuno Mendes across the back, Warren Zaire-Emery, Vitinha and Joao Neves in midfield, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola as the front three.

Chelsea kicked off but fell behind to a killer punch in just the 6th minute. Kvaratskhelia collected the ball after a dreadful error by Mamadou Sarr and fired a left-footed shot past Robert Sanchez to make it 0-1 on the night, 2-6 on aggregate. Chelsea tried to respond but the midfield trio of Palmer, Neto and Fernandez struggled to gain a foothold. Pedro Neto saw a left-footed shot from inside the PSG penalty area deflected off a Chelsea player for a goal kick.

Then in the 14th minute, PSG doubled their lead on a devastating counter-attack. Achraf Hakimi surged forward and picked out Bradley Barcola, who fired a right-footed strike into the top left corner to make it 0-2 (2-7 on aggregate). The pace and precision of the transition was ruthless.

Chelsea forced corners in the 17th and 18th minutes but Safonov dealt with them comfortably. Joao Pedro went close with a left-footed effort in the 36th minute, pushed away by Safonov for another corner that came to nothing. Cole Palmer saw a left-footed shot deflected and saved by Safonov in the 41st minute, and Jorrel Hato headed from inside the six-yard box only for Safonov to save again in the 43rd minute. PSG immediately broke forward and Barcola forced a save from Sanchez on the counter. The half ended 0-2 (2-7 on aggregate) with just one minute of added time.

Rosenior replaced the culpable Sarr with Josh Acheampong at the break. Enrique swapped Joao Neves for Senny Mayulu. Joao Pedro curled a right-footed shot wide in the 55th minute as home supporters began to question Chelsea's lack of attacking intent — why had Garnacho and Delap not been introduced at the start of the second half? Flocks of fans appeared to have given up hope at the interval and left.

Luis Enrique brought on Desire Doue for Barcola in the 58th minute before Rosenior finally made his attacking changes, replacing Joao Pedro, Palmer and Fernandez with Delap, Garnacho and Lavia in the 59th minute. It was too late. Moments later, Mayulu curled a delicious left-footed effort home from an Achraf Hakimi assist to make it 0-3, 2-8 on aggregate, in the 62nd minute. Streams of Chelsea fans headed for the exits with less than half an hour remaining.

PSG's substitutions in the 66th minute — Hernandez for Nuno Mendes and Gonçalo Ramos for Dembele — were the luxury rotations of a side with the tie long won. Cucurella made way for Tosin on 71 minutes, and Kvaratskhelia was given a rest in the 73rd minute, replaced by Kang-in Lee. Garnacho forced a decent save from Safonov from 15 yards in the 79th minute, but it was a consolation effort at best. In the 85th minute, Trevoh Chalobah left the field on a stretcher as Chelsea saw out the final minutes with ten men.

PSG went through 8-2 on aggregate with no added time after a thoroughly professional and classy performance at Stamford Bridge, setting up a quarter-final tie against Liverpool or Galatasaray. Chelsea's European campaign is over. Their realistic hopes of silverware now rest on an Emirates FA Cup Quarter-Final at home to League 1 Port Vale, with European qualification via the Premier League — perhaps the Europa League or Europa Conference League — the other route back into continental competition.

Author's Standout Players

  • Achraf Hakimi — Exceptional on both flanks, providing the assist for Barcola's goal and Mayulu's strike. Drove PSG's counter-attacks with pace and intelligence all evening.
  • Khvicha Kvaratskhelia — Pounced on Sarr's error to open the scoring inside six minutes, setting the tone for the entire match. Averaged a goal or assist every 63 minutes in this season's Champions League — the best ratio by a PSG player with five or more involvements in a single edition.
  • Senny Mayulu — Came on at half time and scored one of the goals of the night with a curling left-footed effort. Showed composure beyond his years.
  • Matvei Safonov — Made several important saves to deny Palmer, Joao Pedro and Hato when Chelsea were pushing for a way back into the tie.

Pre-Match Records

  • Chelsea were winless in five Champions League meetings with PSG (D2, L3) — matching their joint-worst run against any opponent in the competition.
  • PSG had more different goalscorers (13, excluding own goals) than any other team in the Champions League this season.
  • Enzo Fernández led Chelsea in goal involvements (5), defensive line-breaking passes (12) and chances created (13) in the Champions League this season.
  • Only one team in Champions League history had overturned a three-goal first-leg deficit against the holders: Deportivo de La Coruña vs Milan in 2003-04 (lost 1-4 away, won 4-0 at home).
