The Story of the Match

NEW ZEALAND beat England convincingly by 253 runs at the KIA Oval in the 2nd Rothesay Test Match before lunch on day 5. Matt Henry's high class bowling performance blew England away with 6 for 29 with the ball (3 for 5 in the morning session) to follow up his 5 for 80 in the 1st innings and drive the tourists to a massive victory, levelling the three match series at one apiece going into the 3rd Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Matt Henry was named man of the match taking match bowling figures of 11 for 109. England lasted just 49 minutes on the morning of the fifth day. England have now lost six of their last eight Test matches.

England had been set a world record 463 runs to win the Test Match at the KIA Oval. England ended the fourth day with the result of the Test Match in the balance, on 182 for 5 from 48 overs still requiring 281 runs to win while New Zealand needed a further 5 wickets for victory. New Zealand were in the driving seat but England still had a chance with Joe Root 75 not out overnight.

Joe Root was dismissed lbw to Matt Henry for 77 runs, having added only 2 runs to his overnight score, from 145 balls with eight boundary fours, when he was out at 11.09 am with the total 188 for 6 from 50.1 overs. Then, after two deliveries, pace ace Jofra Archer was clean bowled by Matt Henry for 0 from 2 balls when the total was 188 for 7 from 50.3 overs.

Jordan Cox, 0 not out, who had partnered Joe Root overnight, was then joined by Matt Fisher, who hit 50 not out in the England 1st innings. However, Matt Fisher only lasted 8 deliveries before he was clean bowled by Matt Henry when the total was 192 for 8 from 52.5 overs. Matt Henry was on fire with the ball and with his next delivery he had Josh Tongue caught by Daryl Mitchell at first slip for a golden duck as England slumped to 192 for 9 from 53 overs.

Jordan Cox hit three boundaries with one over the ropes, but it was all too late for England. When Cox was clean bowled by Matt Henry for 25 runs from 45 balls with one boundary six and two boundary fours at 11.49 am the tourists had won the match. Matt Henry had taken 3 for 5 in the session and innings figures of 6 for 29. Sonny Baker was not out on 0 from 9 balls as England were dismissed for 209 from 58.1 overs and New Zealand won by a massive 253 runs. Kyle Jamieson ended with 3 for 61 with the ball and supported Matt Henry well.

England had scored a disappointing 27 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the morning's play before New Zealand wound up a massive win by 253 runs as Matt Henry blew England away in style.
