England v New Zealand 2nd Test Day 2: New Zealand in Control as Phillips Century Sets Up 391 and England Trail by 169
The Story of the Match
NEW ZEALAND ended the second day of the 2nd Rothesay Test Match at the KIA Oval, London, in control. Having added 100 runs for their last three wickets in the morning session the tourists took their total to 391 shortly before lunch. By the close of play they had dismissed England's top six batters in Ben Duckett (36), Emilio Gay (53), Jacob Bethell (9), Joe Root (46), Harry Brook (24) and James Rew (24). When play ended at 7.00 pm, England had reached 222 for 6 from 59 overs, still trailing by 169 runs.
New Zealand started the second day of the 2nd Rothesay Test Match on 290 for 7 from 77 overs with the overnight not out batters Glenn Phillips on 49 from 74 balls with nine boundary fours and Kyle Jamieson on 6 from 12 balls with one boundary four. England needed to bounce back in the pre-lunch session taking the remaining 3 wickets quickly. That did not happen as England would have liked. It was New Zealand's morning as they added 100 runs for the last 3 wickets from 19.2 overs.
New Zealand's late order batters were looking for north of 350 runs and they overachieved that, scoring nine runs short of 400.
Ben Duckett dropped Kyle Jamieson on the deep mid-wicket boundary when the total was 318 for 7. England took the new ball after only one more run was added to the total at 319 for 7.
The first wicket of the morning, which was the 8th wicket of the innings, came after the overnight batters had added a further 28 runs when Kyle Jamieson was bowled by Jacob Bethell for 41 runs from 48 balls with seven boundary fours when the total had reached 367 for 8 after 89.3 overs. It was Bethell's third wicket of the innings and his best bowling performance of his Test career to date.
Glenn Phillips, the New Zealand number 7 batter, achieved his maiden Test hundred from 133 balls with eighteen boundary fours when he hit Jofra Archer in his first over of the morning for a single. Shortly after that his batting partner, Matt Henry, spooned up a catch to mid-off and was caught by Josh Tongue off Jofra Archer for 5 runs from 19 balls when the total was 391 for 9 from 95.4 overs.
New Zealand lost their remaining wicket without adding to the total in the next over and were dismissed for 391 from 96.2 overs, when Glenn Phillips was caught by Emilio Gay off the bowling of Matt Fisher for 100 runs from 135 balls with eighteen boundary fours. New Zealand added 100 runs for the loss of the last 3 wickets in the morning session from 19.2 overs, thanks in the main to Glenn Phillips and Kyle Jamieson's late order batting.
England had ten minutes to survive before the luncheon interval against Nathan Smith and Kyle Jamieson. By lunch England had reached 15 for 0 from 3 overs with Ben Duckett on 7 not out and Emilio Gay on 8 not out.
Ben Duckett was playing so well and looking to make a big score, until the score reached 45 when he was run out by a direct throw at the striker's end by Nathan Smith. He was out for 36 runs from 25 balls with five boundary fours when the total was 45 for 1 from 7.5 overs.
Emilio Gay, who batted well at Lord's in the last Test, was 11 not out at the time, when he was joined at the wicket by Jacob Bethell who came in at number 3. England lost their second wicket at 68 for 2 when Jacob Bethell played down the wrong line to Nathan Smith and was caught behind the wicket by Tom Blundell for 9 runs from 25 balls with two boundary fours. The promising youngster had failed again.
Emilio Gay was then on 22 not out when he was joined by England captain Joe Root. Gay inched towards his second Test 50. Emilio Gay and Joe Root added 50 for the 3rd wicket partnership from 60 balls with Gay 26 and Root 19 with 5 extras.
At tea England reached 118 for 2 from 27 overs with Gay 48 not out from 92 balls with eight boundary fours and Joe Root 19 not out from 22 balls with three boundary fours. Shortly after tea the players left the field for rain with England on 119 for 2 from 27.5 overs with Gay 48 not out and Root 20 not out.
Emilio Gay reached his 50 from 112 balls with nine boundary fours when he hit Will O'Rourke to the square leg boundary with a nicely timed hook shot. Two balls after reaching his 50 Gay was out, caught behind off his glove by Tom Blundell off the bowling of Will O'Rourke for 53 runs from 114 balls with nine boundary fours.
Harry Brook, the number 1 batter in Test Cricket, came to the wicket to join Joe Root who was then on 37 not out. Harry Brook hit a six and a four within his first dozen runs as he started his innings in style.
England's innings then faltered badly. First Joe Root, who batted steadily in his usual manner, was given out lbw to Matt Henry for 46 from 57 balls with eight boundary fours when the total was 170 for 4.
James Rew, who normally bats for Somerset at number 4, came in to bat at number 6 on Test debut with Harry Brook on 18 not out. Harry Brook was lbw to Matt Henry for 24 from 32 balls with one boundary six and two boundary fours when the total was 177 for 5 from 42.1 overs. Matt Henry at that time was 2 for 46 with England reeling on 177 with half the team back in the pavilion.
James Rew was then joined by fellow debutant Jordan Cox. Rew was dropped by Ravindra after a top edge pull to leg when he was on 23 runs and the total 215 for 5.
Rew was out caught by Daryl Mitchell at second slip off Will O'Rourke for 24 runs from 34 balls with two boundary fours when the total had reached 217 for 6 from 55.5 overs.
Jofra Archer came in at number 8 to join Jordan Cox who was 16 not out for the last ten minutes of the day's play. England ended the 2nd day on 222 for 6 from 59 overs trailing New Zealand by 169 runs on 1st innings with 4 wickets remaining. Jordan Cox played watchfully for 22 not out from 42 balls with two boundary fours and Jofra Archer was 0 not out from 11 balls.
New Zealand would have been pleased with their performance on day 2, ending 169 runs in front with England only having 4 wickets remaining in their 1st innings. 78.2 overs were bowled in the day whereas 77 overs were bowled on day 1.
Author's Standout Players
- Glenn Phillips (New Zealand) - Resumed on 49 and went on to a magnificent maiden Test hundred of 100 from 135 balls with eighteen boundary fours, marshalling the lower order to add 100 for the last three wickets and put New Zealand firmly in command
- Jacob Bethell (England) - Backed up his day-one strikes by bowling Kyle Jamieson to claim his third wicket of the innings and a career-best Test return of 3 for 26, the lone England bowler to trouble the tourists in the morning session
- Emilio Gay (England) - Played a lone hand with the bat, battling to a second Test fifty of 53 amid a procession of dismissals at the other end, before falling two balls after reaching the milestone with England's innings subsiding around him
