The Story of the Match

Official Matchday Programme - Luton Town vs Northampton Town, 15th April 2026

LUTON TOWN returned to SkyBet League 1 action last night with a 2-1 victory to go 7th in the table at a noisy Kenilworth Road in front of a crowd of 9,936 fans. It came three days after lifting the Vertu Cup 3-1 in the Wembley Final on Sunday against Stockport County. They beat relegation-threatened Northampton Town on the night to go three points behind 6th placed Stevenage. Northampton Town were relegated as a result of the defeat at Kenilworth Road.

Luton Town won the reverse fixture earlier in the season back in October 2025 at Sixfields Stadium 1-0 and the Hatters were looking to achieve a first Football League double over Northampton Town since the 1968-69 season. Luton Town were also looking to win three consecutive League games for the first time since April 2025. The Hatters have won four of their last five in League 1 with one draw.

Northampton Town had won just two of their last 25 away matches against Luton Town (drawn four and lost nineteen), although they did win on their last visit to Kenilworth Road in December 2015 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller. Northampton Town had lost each of their last six League 1 games. Only four times in their League history have they lost seven or more games in a row, most recently in August 2001 when they lost seven in a row.

Luton Town came into the game off the back of five wins against Stockport County (Vertu Trophy Cup Final at Wembley) 3-1, AFC Wimbledon (away) 3-0, Peterborough United (home) 2-1, Exeter City (home) 3-2, Wycombe Wanderers (away) 2-1 and a single draw against Stockport County (home) 1-1.

Northampton Town came into the game in dreadful form with five straight defeats against Wigan Athletic (home) 1-3, Bradford City (away) 0-1, Mansfield Town (away) 1-4, Stockport County (away) 1-2 and Burton Albion (home) 0-2. Northampton had not won a League match since 7th February when they beat Stevenage 3-1 at Sixfields - that was eleven matches ago.

Luton Town manager Jack Wilshere selected a 4-4-2 formation with Josh Keeley in goal, then a back four of Nigel Lonwijk, Mads Anderson, captain Kal Naismith and Joe Johnson, then a four-man midfield of Jake Richards, Liam Walsh, Jordan Clark and Emilio Lawrence, with Kasey Palmer and Nahki Wells up front. Luton Town made three changes from Sunday, replacing James Shea, Hakeem Odoffin and Isaiah Jones with Josh Keeley, Joe Johnson and Nigel Lonwijk.

Northampton Town interim manager Colin Calderwood selected a 4-4-2 formation with Lee Burge in goal, then a back four of Jack Burroughs, Max Dyche son of Sean Dyche, captain Jon Guthrie and Nesta Guinness-Walker, then a four-man midfield of Cameron McGeehan, Tyrese Fornah, Dean Campbell and Michael Jacobs, with Tom Eaves and Will Hoskins up front. Northampton Town made four changes from their last match with Wigan, replacing Elliott Moore, Kyle McAdam, Terry Taylor and Jake Evans with Max Dyche, Tyrese Fornah, Tom Eaves and Nesta Guinness-Walker. Northampton Town kicked off the first half defending the Oak Road end of the ground.

The Cobblers, bottom of the table, did not look like a team in deep relegation trouble as they started brightly. If Northampton Town lost they were as good as down, being 15 points adrift of 20th placed Wimbledon. Northampton had the first chance of the game in the 13th minute with Cameron McGeehan picking the ball up in midfield, driving forward and finding Nesta Guinness-Walker, who crossed left footed into the penalty area where Tom Eaves volleyed right footed on target - but his effort was well saved by Josh Keeley.

In the 24th minute Kasey Palmer saw his right footed free kick from 22 yards out go wide of the goal. Northampton Town then took the lead through a long ball punted upfield by Lee Burge, headed on by striker Tom Eaves into the path of Will Hoskins, who chipped his right footed shot over the advancing Josh Keeley into an empty net to make it 0-1 to the visitors in the 31st minute.

Emilio Lawrence obtained a corner in the 37th minute which was taken by Liam Walsh to the back post but it came to nothing for the Hatters. Luton then came forward but Dean Campbell put the ball out for another corner, which also came to nothing for the home side.

Luton Town came back strongly after falling behind and levelled the score in the 43rd minute when Liam Walsh fired home left footed from an assist by the impressive Emilio Lawrence to make it 1-1. The teams went in level at the break.

Luton Town manager Jack Wilshere replaced Jake Richards with Shayden Morris at half time. Luton started the second half taking the early play to Northampton, who were on the back foot and defending in numbers. A 54th minute corner produced a near post header by Mads Anderson but his effort was blocked.

Northampton went close to scoring through a Cameron McGeehan left footed shot in the 56th minute. Luton came forward in the 58th minute with Jordan Clark firing a right footed shot just over the crossbar. Luton upped the tempo around the hour mark, coming forward in waves. Lawrence, Palmer and Clark supported Nahki Wells, who had bagged two of the goals in the Wembley win on Sunday and was lively when he had the ball.

McGeehan was yellow carded in the 62nd minute. Jack Wilshere introduced Ali Al-Hamadi for Nahki Wells in the 66th minute to bring on fresh legs. In the 71st and 72nd minutes Colin Calderwood substituted Jack Burroughs, Tyrese Fornah and Michael Jacobs with Conor McCarthy, Elliott List and Kamarai Swyer. McCarthy was yellow carded in the 76th minute and Guthrie in the 77th minute.

In the 76th minute Ali Al-Hamadi fired a right footed shot from inside the penalty area that struck the post and saw the ball bounce back off the back of goalkeeper Lee Burge without crossing the line. Elliott List came forward for Northampton in the 79th minute and obtained a corner but it came to nothing.

Luton Town replaced Jordan Clark and Emilio Lawrence with Caden van den Berg and Kwame Kodua in the 82nd minute. Northampton Town also made changes in the 82nd minute, replacing Will Hoskins and Tom Eaves with Terry Taylor and Jake Evans.

The winning goal was a beauty. Captain Kal Naismith fired home a left footed free kick from 25 yards out into the top corner of Lee Burge's net to send the stadium wild with joy - a great comeback victory for the Town. Liam Walsh was replaced by George Saville in the 90th minute. Lonwijk and Keeley were yellow carded in added time near the end of the game.

The win for Luton Town took them to 64 points in 7th spot, three points behind Stevenage, with both sides having four matches to play. Luton Town are at home to Barnsley and away to Rotherham United, Mansfield Town and Bolton Wanderers. Stevenage meanwhile have to play Lincoln City, Barnsley and Wigan at home and travel away to Doncaster Rovers. So it is very much all to play for in League 1 in the remaining matches.
