The Story of the Match

OLIVER NORWOOD the stalwart captain of the visitors Stockport County, formerly of Sheffield United, Fulham and Brighton & Hove Albion amongst others, grabbed a valuable point for the visitors with a touch of class as he equalised in the 78th minute straight from a free kick into the near post from 35 yards out which caught Luton Town goalkeeper Josh Keeley unawares to make it 1-1. Emilio Lawrence on loan from Manchester City was the difference between the two sides until the crafty equalising goal.

Luton Town had looked certain to beat promotion play-off and fellow EFL Trophy finalists Stockport County at Kenilworth Road yesterday lunchtime in front of a crowd of 10,791 on a sunny afternoon in South West Bedfordshire, but the two sides had to settle for a draw which did more for the visitors than Jack Wilshere's Hatters.

Luton Town were unbeaten across their last dozen Football League games against Stockport County (won seven, drawn five), winning each of the last three whilst scoring exactly three goals in each. Stockport County had won just one of their nine away Football League games against Luton Town (drawn three, lost five), a 3-0 success at Kenilworth Road in September 1966 was their best recent visit.

Luton Town were looking to win three successive league games for the first time since April last season, having beaten Wycombe Wanderers home (2-1) and Exeter City home (3-2) in their last two league matches. Luton Town won the reverse fixture earlier in the season 3-0 at Edgeley Park. Meanwhile, Stockport County had lost each of their last four away league games, as many as in their prior twenty away league matches (won ten, drawn six).

Luton Town came into the game - which was a dry run for the EFL Trophy Final when the two teams meet at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 12th April - with three wins against Exeter City (home) 3-2 last time out, Wycombe Wanderers (away) 2-1 and Northampton Town (home) EFL Trophy Semi-Final 2-1, one draw against Doncaster Rovers (away) 1-1 and one defeat against Reading (home) 2-3. Stockport County came into the game with two wins against Northampton Town (home) 2-1 last time out and Doncaster Rovers (away) EFL Trophy Semi-Final 1-0 and three defeats against Lincoln City (away) 1-3, Stevenage (away) 1-2 and Burton Albion (away) 0-3.

Luton Town manager Jack Wilshere, who had been not getting positive vibes from some of the fan base in recent weeks, was hoping that the Hatters could make a late run for the play-offs and sneak into 6th spot come the end of the league campaign. Wilshere selected a 3-4-2-1 formation with Josh Keeley in goal, then a back three of Nigel Lonwijk, Hakeem Odoffin and captain Kal Naismith, then a four-man midfield of Jake Richards, Isaiah Jones, George Saville and Emilio Lawrence, with two attacking midfielders in Kasey Palmer and Jordan Clark and Devante Cole up top.

Stockport County boss Dave Challinor also set up with a 3-4-2-1 formation with Corey Addai in goal, then a back three of Josh Dacres-Cogley, Brad Hills and Ethan Pye, then four across the middle in Jack Diamond, captain Oliver Norwood, Odin Bailey and Ben Osborn, then two playing ahead in Tayo Edun and Tanto Olaofe, with Kyle Wootton alone up front.

Luton Town kicked off the first half in bright early afternoon sunshine and started well, taking the early play to Stockport County who wore a changed strip of green and white. Kasey Palmer and Jake Richards had two good runs into the County penalty area early on but were thwarted by a tackle and a block. In the seventh minute Isaiah Jones fired a right-footed shot high over the crossbar from 20 yards out as the Hatters pressed for an early goal. Then Luton's next attack saw Jordan Clark fluff a back post effort from a cross into the box by Palmer in the eighth minute.

Luton Town defender Hakeem Odoffin saw a right-footed shot saved by Corey Addai in the 21st minute. Stockport County went close through a left-footed effort by Ethan Pye at the back post but Josh Keeley denied the visitors with a good save in the 24th minute.

Luton Town took a deserved lead through a right-footed curling shot which went in off the inside of the post by the impressive Emilio Lawrence in the 28th minute to make it 1-0 to the home side from the edge of the box. The Manchester City loanee has been a breath of fresh air on the flank for Luton since his arrival in January.

Odoffin missed the target with a left-footed shot from an assist by Kasey Palmer in the 33rd minute as the Hatters pressed for a second goal before the break. Luton Town went close to adding a second through Kasey Palmer and Devante Cole in the 39th minute but both missed the cross from Jake Richards into the six-yard box with the goal gaping. Brad Hills saw a header go over the crossbar for Stockport from an assist by Ben Osborn in the 43rd minute. Luton Town led 1-0 at the interval.

Stockport County kicked off the second half 1-0 down and replaced Kyle Wootton with Adam Sidibeh in the 46th minute. Brad Hills left the field injured and was replaced in the centre of defence by Joseph Olowu in the 50th minute. Stockport looked the better side after the interval with Oliver Norwood pulling the strings in midfield.

Stockport had a corner in the 55th minute taken deep to the back post by Odin Bailey, but Luton cleared as far as Norwood who volleyed a right-footed shot back into the penalty area, though his effort was blocked by a Luton player. Luton went close to a second goal in the 64th minute as Kal Naismith rose to head on target but Corey Addai tipped his effort over for a corner. Luton had two quick corners in the 64th and 65th minutes, both defended well by Stockport.

Stockport County replaced Tayo Edun with Malik Mothersille in the 68th minute. Luton Town made a triple substitution in the 71st and 72nd minutes, with Emilio Lawrence replaced by Gideon Kodua, Kasey Palmer by Davy van den Berg and Devante Cole by Ali Al-Hamadi.

Stockport County equalised in the 78th minute straight from a free kick taken by Oliver Norwood into the near post from 35 yards out which caught Luton goalkeeper Josh Keeley unawares to make it 1-1. A stunning strike from the experienced midfielder that left the Kenilworth Road crowd stunned.

Stockport County replaced Tanto Olaofe and Odin Bailey with Josh Stokes and Lewis Bate in the 84th and 85th minutes. Luton Town replaced George Saville and Jake Richards with Sverre Sandal and Shayden Morris in the 88th minute.

A draw was a fair result in the end as Luton failed to respond to the equalising goal. Luton Town ended the match in 11th place (55 points) with the draw, three points outside the play-off area, meanwhile Stockport remained in 5th place (60 points).

Luton Town now go into the international break with Peterborough United at home on 3rd April and AFC Wimbledon away on 6th April before playing Stockport County again in the EFL Trophy Final a week later.
