The Story of the Match

QUEENS PARK RANGERS were held to a goalless draw by an improving Bristol City in W12 as the points were shared in front of a crowd of 16,745 fans in the lunchtime encounter which was a fair result as neither side really did enough to take the three points in the spring sunshine.

Queens Park Rangers were unbeaten in five league games against Bristol City (won two, drawn three), and were looking to complete the league double over the Robins for the first time since 2002-03. Bristol City themselves were unbeaten in their last eight away league games against QPR (won five, drawn three), with their last two visits finishing level. QPR had picked up 10 points in their last four Championship matches, more than in their previous 11 games combined (won two, drawn three, lost six). The best news for QPR fans coming to W12 was the return of Rumarn Burrell on the substitutes bench for QPR. He came on in the 68th minute to loud cheers from the R's fans for the last 20 minutes or so.

Meanwhile, since Roy Hodgson arrived at Bristol City, the Robins are the only side to win both of their matches in the Championship. A victory in this game would see him equal his total from his 20 league games in charge of them during the 1981-82 season (won three, drawn five, lost twelve). No side has benefitted from more own goals in the Championship this season than QPR (six, level with Ipswich Town), drawing 1-1 with Preston North End up at Deepdale, last time out thanks to a Thierry Small own goal.

QPR came into the game with three wins against Watford (home) 2-1, Portsmouth (home) 6-1 and Leicester City (away) 3-1, a draw against Preston North End (away) 1-1 last time out and three losses to Birmingham City (away) 0-1, Middlesbrough (home) 0-4 and Sheffield United (home) 0-2.

Meanwhile, Bristol City managed by the former England boss Roy Hodgson and legend of the great game came into the match off the back of a slightly better run with two wins against Sheffield United (home) 1-0 last time out and Charlton Athletic (away) 2-1, one draw against Middlesbrough (away) 0-0 and three defeats against West Bromwich Albion (home) 0-1, Leicester City (away) 0-2 and Coventry City (home) 0-2.

QPR manager Julien Stephan started with a 4-4-2 formation with Joe Walsh in goal, then a back four of Amadou Mbengue, Ronnie Edwards the captain, Jake Clarke-Salter and Rhys Norrington-Davies then a four-man midfield of Paul Smyth, Jonathan Varane, Kieran Morgan and Harvey Vale with Richard Kone and Rayan Kolli up top. QPR replaced Jimmy Dunne with Jake Clarke-Salter in central defence. Ronnie Edwards was the skipper with no Jimmy Dunne.

Bristol City manager Roy Hodgson started with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Radek Vitek in goal then a back four of captain Jason Knight, Noah Eile, Neto Borges, and Cameron Pring then two holding midfielders in Sam Morsy and Randell then three attacking midfielders in Mark Sykes, Scott Twine and Max Bird with Emil Riis up front. Bristol City were unchanged from Sheffield United last time out.

Bristol City started the day a place above QPR in 11th spot on 57 points from 41 matches played. QPR were in 12th with same points and games played. Both teams were 9 points outside the playoffs, so both were unlikely to make the playoff places this season at this late stage.

QPR kicked off the first half defending the Loftus Road end of the compact stadium. QPR started well against Bristol City with Jonathan Varane seeing his right footed shot from inside the penalty area saved by Vitek in the 2nd minute.

Bristol City's first chance fell to Sam Morsy who saw a right footed shot from outside the penalty area from an assist by Cameron Pring saved by Joe Walsh in the 14th minute. Then with Bristol City's next opportunity Mark Sykes saw a right footed shot from an assist by Scott Twine saved by Joe Walsh in the 15th minute.

In the 26th minute Kieran Morgan saw a right footed shot from outside the penalty area go wide of the target. Jonathan Varane was yellow carded in the 27th minute for a niggling foul.

Scott Twine was close to opening the scoring in the 29th minute from six yards out with a right footed shot but Joe Walsh denied him with a good save. Bristol City looked the stronger after half an hour but had failed to take the chances they had made in front of goal.

Emil Riis' left footed shot from 25 yards out in the 37th minute was saved by Joe Walsh at the second attempt with Scott Twine closing in. QPR's midfield of Varane, Morgan, Smyth and Vale found it difficult to unlock a solid Robins back line.

Mbengue's right wing cross was put out for a corner by Neto Borges but the resultant corner came to nothing for the R's. Bristol City went close to scoring in the 45th minute through Mark Sykes, then Emil Riis and Scott Twine but Joe Walsh saved to deny Bristol City.

The teams went in level 0-0 at the interval. Bristol City kicked off the second half. Bristol City started the second half well having ended the first half the stronger of the two sides, they had been the more likely to have scored.

Roy Hodgson had started well generating more positivity around performances for the Robins. In the 51st minute Scott Twine had a right footed shot from 25 yards out well saved by Joe Walsh down to his right as the Robins pressed for an opener.

The QPR fans sung loudly for Burrell in the 54th minute as the striker warmed up on the sidelines. Mbengue was yellow carded in the 55th minute for back chat with referee Ed Duckworth.

Paul Smyth's speedy pace did not look like unlocking the Robins defence - they were well marshalled at the back by Knight, Neto Borges, Eile and Pring. Morsy was impressive too for the visitors, a key individual who knows what Hodgson the master tactician requires of his key men.

QPR had not brought a save out of Vitek in the opening hour of the game. Noah Eile was finally yellow carded in the 66th minute for a challenge on Rayan Kolli. From the free kick QPR's Harvey Vale tested the Bristol City wall.

QPR replaced Rayan Kolli and Richard Kone with Rumarn Burrell and Daniel Bennie in the 68th and 69th minute.

QPR had a free kick 25 yards out in the 73rd minute after Randell had fouled. The free kick taken by Vale hit the wall and was cleared up field quickly by City.

Julien Stephan replaced Kieran Morgan with Kwame Poku in the 75th minute whilst Roy Hodgson replaced Emil Riis and Mark Sykes with Delano Burgzorg and Ross McCrorie in the 76th minute. George Earthy replaced Max Bird in the 83rd minute.

Rhys Norrington-Davies was yellow carded in the 85th minute for a foul which gave Bristol City a free kick in a dangerous position. Scott Twine took it but it came to nothing as the QPR defence held firm. Scott Twine was replaced by Tomi Horvat in the 88th minute.

The draw was the right result, with both sides drawing blanks in front of goal.

Author's Standout Players

  • Joe Walsh (QPR) - The QPR goalkeeper was the busiest man on the pitch, making a string of saves to deny Bristol City. His save from Twine in the 29th minute and again in the 51st minute were particularly impressive. Without Walsh, QPR would not have taken a point.
  • Sam Morsy (Bristol City) - The experienced midfielder was impressive for the visitors, controlling the tempo and showing exactly what Roy Hodgson requires of his key men. A commanding presence in the middle of the park.
  • Scott Twine (Bristol City) - The most creative player on the pitch, Twine was at the heart of everything good for the Robins. Came closest to scoring on multiple occasions but was denied by Walsh each time.
  • Jason Knight (Bristol City) - The Bristol City captain marshalled the defence superbly, helping to keep QPR's attacking threat at bay throughout the 90 minutes.
  • Harvey Vale (QPR) - QPR's brightest spark going forward, Vale tested the Bristol City defence with his set piece delivery and was a willing runner throughout.

QPR 1-2 Swansea City: Swans Head Down M4 With The Points in Cook's Last Game

Swansea City headed down the M4 with all three points after a 2-1 win at Loftus Road, Ronald's early goal and a Zan Vipotnik penalty enough to condemn QPR to defeat on a night that saw Steve Cook bow out after his 100th appearance for the club, Rhys Norrington-Davies' 90th-minute header proving no more than consolation for the R's.
