The Story of the Match

Middlesbrough emphatically beat QPR 4-0 at the MATRADE Loftus Road Stadium in front of a crowd of 15,940, thanks to goals from David Strelec with a close-range tap-in, Alan Browne with a header, a super right-footed curler from Hayden Hackney and a penalty converted by Tommy Conway. The victory strengthened the Riverside club's automatic promotion push towards the Premier League as May approaches.

QPR hosted promotion-chasing Middlesbrough at teatime in the Sky Bet Championship, arriving on the back of mixed form. A 3-1 away win at Hull City and a goalless draw at Charlton Athletic had been followed by heavy defeats to Blackburn Rovers (1-3), Southampton (0-5) and Sheffield United (0-2). Middlesbrough's recent record was stronger, with wins at Sheffield United (2-1) and Birmingham City (3-1), draws against Oxford United (0-0) and Leicester City (1-1), and a defeat at Coventry City (1-3).

History was also against Rangers. They had lost their previous four league meetings with Middlesbrough and had never previously suffered five successive defeats to Boro. The visitors, meanwhile, had already won their last two league trips to Loftus Road, having managed just three victories in their first 26 visits between 1966 and 2022.

Queens Park Rangers manager Julien Stéphan set his side up in a 4-5-1 formation, with Walsh in goal behind a defence of Amadou Mbengue, Ronnie Edwards, captain Jimmy Dunne and Rhys Norrington-Davies. A five-man midfield of Harvey Vale, Kieran Morgan, Isaac Hayden, Jonathan Varane and Koki Saito supported lone striker Richard Kone.

Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg opted for a 3-4-1-2 system. Sol Brynn started in goal behind a back three of Luke Ayling, captain Dael Fry and Alan Browne. Callum Brittain, Aidan Morris, Hayden Hackney and Matt Targett operated across midfield, with Riley McGree just behind front pair David Strelec and Morgan Whittaker.

Boro kicked off and, although Rangers began brightly, they struggled to open up the visitors. The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Strelec bundled home from close range after an initial effort involving Whittaker had caused confusion in the QPR defence. Rangers responded positively, with Kone forcing a smart save from Brynn in the 24th minute, while Fry was forced off injured and replaced by Adilson Malanda on 31 minutes. Hackney also threatened before the interval as Middlesbrough took a 1-0 lead into half-time.

QPR again started the second half with purpose, searching for an equaliser, but the Middlesbrough defence stood firm. Strelec nearly doubled the lead in the 54th minute, only to be denied by Walsh. Middlesbrough introduced Jeremy Sarmiento and Tommy Conway in the 66th minute - a move that paid dividends shortly afterwards.

Alan Browne made it 2-0 when he headed home from close range after Conway's initial effort had struck the crossbar and bounced kindly into his path. The game was effectively sealed moments later as Hackney curled in a lovely right-footed strike in the 72nd minute, delighting the travelling Boro support.

Substitutions followed for both sides as Rangers attempted to stem the tide, but Middlesbrough continued to control proceedings. Conway completed the rout from the penalty spot in the 88th minute after Tylon Smith conceded the foul. By the final whistle, large sections of the Loftus Road crowd had already departed, while Middlesbrough celebrated a deserved and comfortable victory that moved them closer to the Championship summit.

QPR 1-2 Swansea City: Swans Head Down M4 With The Points in Cook's Last Game
