Brentford 3-0 Chelsea: Premier League Match Report

The last three encounters between the two sides had seen a Chelsea 2-0 home win in January 2026 and two draws at Brentford 2-2 in September 2025 and 0-0 in April 2025.

Brentford were winless in all five of their Premier League home games against Chelsea with each of the last four games ending in draws with one previous loss to the Blues. Having lost three of their first five Premier League games against Brentford (won one, drawn one), Chelsea were now unbeaten in their last five games against Brentford (won two, drawn three).

Ten of the Bees' last fourteen Premier League matches have been drawn (won two, lost two). Brentford was unbeaten in their last six Premier League games (won one, drawn five), only enjoying longer runs in the Premier League in March 2023 (twelve games) and September 2023 (seven). The Blues had both scored and conceded ten plus goals in their opening five games of a Premier League campaign just once before, doing so back in the 2019-20 season (for eleven, against eleven).

Only Leeds United had a higher set-piece expected goals total (excluding spot kicks) than the Bees in the Premier League so far this campaign, while Chelsea had the seventh-highest total against in the Premier League.

Brentford and Chelsea were the only two sides that had opened the scoring in each of their four Premier League games so far this campaign. Overall, this campaign, the side that had scored first has gone on to win over 58% of games, which is actually the lowest proportion in a Premier League campaign to date.

Only three players had applied more high intensity pressures in their own half in the Premier League so far this campaign than the impressive Mamadou Sangare for Brentford. Chelsea's Joao Pedro had more goal involvements than any other player in the Premier League so far this season with (six - three goals and three assists). Since the start of last season, Joao Pedro has scored and assisted in more games than any other player in the Premier League, including in three of his four matches this campaign.

Chelsea's Danny Welbeck had scored in each of his last three Premier League matches against Brentford. Welbeck had never netted in four consecutive matches against a specific opponent in the Premier League before.

Brentford manager Keith Andrews started with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Caoimhin Kelleher in goal then a back four of Michael Kayode, Jannik Schuster, Kristoffer Ajer and Keane Lewis-Potter then two holding midfielders in Yehor Yarmoliuk and captain Vitaly Janelt then three attacking midfielders in Jaidon Anthony, Mikkel Damsgaard and Kevin Schade with Igor Thiago up front. Brentford made two changes with Aaron Hickey and Mamadou Sangare replaced by Michael Kayode and Mikkel Damsgaard.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso started with a 3-4-2-1 formation with Emi Martinez in goal, then a back three of Wesley Fofana, Maxence Lacroix and captain Levi Colwill then a four man midfield of Pedro Neto, Jordan Henderson, Valentin Barco and Pep Chavarria then Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers with Danny Welbeck up front. Chelsea gave a debut to ex-Bees midfielder Jordan Henderson.

Chelsea kicked off the first half in a changed strip of all black with yellow socks and Brentford were in their traditional red and white stripes and black shorts and socks.

Pedro Neto saw a left footed shot in the ninth minute well saved by Caoimhin Kelleher in the Brentford goal. Brentford forced a couple of corners in the 21st and 22nd minutes but Chelsea were solid at the back from the set pieces.

Keane Lewis-Potter saw a right footed shot blocked in the 23rd minute as Brentford pressed for an opening goal. Chelsea forced a corner through Morgan Rogers off Keane Lewis-Potter in the 28th minute. Chelsea had a free kick in a dangerous position in the 30th minute which was taken by Morgan Rogers but his effort was saved easily by Caoimhin Kelleher in the Bees goal.

Igor Thiago found Yehor Yarmoliuk in the 37th minute but his right footed shot from 15 yards out was well saved by Emi Martinez in the Chelsea goal.

Mikkel Damsgaard shot wide with a right footed effort in the 39th minute. Morgan Rogers saw a left footed shot inside the Brentford penalty area blocked by Kristoffer Ajer after heavy pressure from the visitors in the 41st minute.

The teams went in level at 0-0 at half time. Brentford kicked off the second half with the score at 0-0. Neither side made any half time substitutions.

Brentford went close through Jaidon Anthony with a header early in the second half but after that chance for the Bees it was all Chelsea pushing for an opening on the counter attack after soaking up Brentford pressure. Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade looked impressive when the home side went forward.

In the 58th minute Igor Thiago thundered a right footed shot from 25 yards high and wide of the target. Brentford won a corner in the 60th minute taken by Mikkel Damsgaard to the back post where Brentford's Jannik Schuster rose the highest at the back post to head into the path of Jaidon Anthony and he headed home solidly in the 61st minute to make it 1-0 to the Bees.

Brentford looked the more likely to score again as the Bees stretched Chelsea on the counter attack after soaking up pressure from Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Danny Welbeck. Chelsea went close to pulling a goal back in the 67th minute from a corner but Brentford cleared the danger.

Brentford manager Keith Andrews brought on Aaron Hickey and Mamadou Sangare for Michael Kayode and Yehor Yarmoliuk in the 69th minute.

Chelsea replaced Danny Welbeck and Wesley Fofana with Geovany Quenda and Josh Acheampong in the 72nd minute. Cole Palmer saw a left footed shot deflected for a corner in the 78th minute as Chelsea pressed for an equaliser.

Brentford brought on El Hadji Malick Diouf and Dango Ouattara for Jaidon Anthony and Keane Lewis-Potter in the 81st minute. Brentford went 2-0 up after Igor Thiago fired a right footed shot into an empty net after a fast counter attack from Kevin Schade who had his initial shot parried by Emi Martinez into the path of Igor Thiago who converted. Igor Thiago was yellow carded after his goal for shirt removal in his celebrations.

Chelsea brought on Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli and Estevao for Pedro Neto and Valentin Barco in the 87th minute and Brentford brought on Fabio Carvalho for Mikkel Damsgaard in the 87th minute.

Then in the 90th+4 minute substitute Fabio Carvalho fired home a third from close range to seal a 3-0 rout of the Blues.

Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho were the toast of West London as their goals were enough to seal the three points for the Bees in an impressive keenly fought local derby which was Brentford's first home win over Chelsea since 1938.

The team now go into an international break with Brentford achieving their second Premier League win of the campaign against their arch West London rivals and ended the night in 3rd spot.
