England v New Zealand 3rd Test Day 5: New Zealand Win Test by 160 Runs and Series 2-1
The Story of the Match
DAY five of the 3rd Rothesay Test Match at Trent Bridge, Nottingham ended with New Zealand winning by 160 runs when England were dismissed for 212 all out from 51.2 overs.
Yesterday England ended day four with Ben Stokes retired from international cricket and heading for a series defeat against New Zealand, with England needing 373 runs to win the Test and series reeling at 103 for 4 from 15 overs after some indulgent batting, Joe Root not out 9 from 11 balls and Emilio Gay not out 6 from 4 balls, England needing 270 runs to win and New Zealand needing 6 wickets to win the series.
England lost Emilio Gay when the total was 116 for 5 from 18.1 overs when he was caught behind by Tom Blundell off the bowling of Nathan Smith for 10 runs from 17 balls with one boundary 4.
Then Joe Root was dismissed four balls later at 116 for 6 from 18.5 overs when he was run out by Henry Nicholls for 18 runs from 17 balls with three boundary 4's. Jamie Smith was then joined by his Surrey teammate Gus Atkinson and the pair added 75 runs for the 7th wicket partnership before Gus Atkinson was lbw to Mitch Santner for 19 runs from 70 balls with two boundary 4's when the total was 191 for 7 from 41.5 overs.
England reached 150 runs in 26 overs. At lunch England had reached 191 for 7 from 44 overs with Jamie Smith 47 not out and Jofra Archer 0 not out. After lunch Jamie Smith achieved his 50 from 87 balls with one boundary 6 and six boundary 4's.
Jamie Smith was then joined by Jofra Archer and that partnership did not last long, just 7 runs, before Jofra Archer was caught behind by Tom Blundell off the bowling of Nathan Smith for 2 runs from 19 balls when the total was 198 for 9 from 46.5 overs.
Josh Tongue came in next to Jamie Smith and scored just 2 runs from 14 balls before he was run out by Mitch Santner when the total was 212 for 9 in 51.1 overs. Then in the next over the end arrived as Jamie Smith was caught by Nathan Smith off Mitch Santner for 60 runs from 91 balls with one boundary 6 and eight boundary 4's, England all out for 212 from 51.2 overs shortly after 2.10 p.m. New Zealand's bowlers Zak Foulkes bagged 3 for 52, Mitch Santner 2 for 54 and Nathan Smith 2 for 64.
England have now lost seven out of their last nine Test matches. The team lacked mindfulness and the Australian Ashes tour preparations were laughable.
New Zealand won the Test match by 160 runs and won the Crowe Thorpe Trophy 2-1. It was the first time New Zealand had won a Test series in England since 1999, and the first time England had lost a 3 Test series at home since 2012.
England host Pakistan in 3 Tests in August/September in the second Rothesay Test series of the summer, with matches scheduled for Headingley, Lord's and Edgbaston.
England must consider replacing Sam Curran as an all-rounder and captain for Ben Stokes rather than Harry Brook, and most certainly bring back Ben Foulkes as wicketkeeper for Jamie Smith. As for Rob Key and Brendon McCullum, the time has come to pull the rug and bring in Peter Moores and Freddie Flintoff.
England's squad for the Pakistan series could include the following players: Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook*, Ben Foulkes+, Sam Curran*, Gus Atkinson, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir, Ollie Robinson, Matt Fisher, Sonny Baker, Jordan Cox, Jamie Smith+.
Sam Curran as all-rounder, bowler and captain for red ball cricket could be the call for Marcus North.
