The Story of the Match

AFC BOURNEMOUTH beat Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage yesterday afternoon with fans basking May sunshine down by the River Thames, which left the Cherries in 6th spot with a Europa League or Europa Conference League place well within their grasp after the only goal of the game was rifled home by the impressive Rayan with a left footed shot from outside the Fulham penalty area from an assist by his captain Adam Smith in the 53rd minute in front of a good crowd of 27,626 fans including a packed out visiting section from the south coast.

Fulham had won just two of their nine Premier League meetings with Bournemouth (drawn two, lost five) being a 1-0 away in April 2019 and 3-1 at home in February 2024. Bournemouth have won their last two Premier League games against Fulham.

They were looking to complete the double over them for the first time in the competition, last doing so in any division in 2014-15 (Championship). Fulham have failed to score in five of their last seven Premier League games, though did win both in which they found the net in this run (drawn two, lost three). The Cottagers had only failed to score in five of their first 28 league games this term.

Following victories against Burnley and Aston Villa, Fulham were looking to win three consecutive home league games for the first time since December 2023. Bournemouth are unbeaten in their last 15 Premier League games, both their longest run and the longest current run of any side in the competition (won seven, drawn eight).

The only team to have a longer run with all of their games coming while sitting outside the top five in the table are Manchester United between October 2016 and March 2017 (eighteen matches).

Bournemouth conceded 27 goals in their first nine Premier League away games this season (3 per game), shipping at least three goals on seven occasions. They've now conceded just six times in their last eight on the road (less than a goal per game), and never more than twice in a match.

Only the current top two sides Arsenal (five) and Man City (five) have lost fewer Premier League games than Bournemouth this season (seven). The Cherries have drawn a league-high 16 games this term, which is also their most draws in any league campaign since 2005-06 (19 in League One).

Fulham's Raul Jimenez has scored five goals in his six Premier League starts against Bournemouth. Only against West Ham United (seven) and Everton (six) has the Mexican netted more in the competition. Fulham's Bernd Leno has played in each of his side's last 147 Premier League games.

There are only seven occasions of a player featuring in more consecutive matches in the competition, with Leno's run the longest since Kasper Schmeichel's 149 between August 2018 and May 2022. The 19-year-old Junior Kroupi has scored 12 Premier League goals for Bournemouth this season.

There are just five occasions of a teenager netting more in a single campaign that being Robbie Fowler in 1994-95 (twenty-three goals), Michael Owen in both 1997-98 and 1998-99 (eighteen goals), Nicolas Anelka in 1998-99 (thirteen goals) and Romelu Lukaku in 2012-13 (fourteen goals).

Fulham came into the match off the back of two wins against Aston Villa (home) 1-0 and Burnley (home) 3-1, two draws against Brentford (away) 0-0 and Nottingham Forest (away) 0-0 and two defeats against Liverpool (away) 0-2 and Arsenal (away) last time out 0-3.

AFC Bournemouth came into the match off the back of three wins against Newcastle United (away) 1-2, Arsenal (away) 1-2 and Crystal Palace (home) 3-0 last time out and three draws against Leeds United (home) 2-2, Manchester United (home) 2-2 and Burnley (away) 0-0.

Fulham manager Marco Silva started with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Bernd Leno in goal, then a back four of Timothy Castagne, Joachim Andersen, Calvin Bassey and Antonee Robinson then two holding midfielders in captain Tom Cairney and Sasa Lukic - then three attacking midfielders in Harry Wilson, Emile Smith Rowe and Samuel Chukwueze with Rodrigo Muniz up front. Fulham made two changes with Tom Cairney and Rodrigo Muniz coming in for Harrison Reed and Rahul Jimenez.

AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola started with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Djordie Petrovic in goal, then a back four of captain Adam Smith, James Hill, Marcos Senesi and Adrien Truffert then two holding midfielders in Alex Scott and Ryan Christie then three attacking midfielders in Rayan, Junior Kroupi and Marcus Tavernier with Evanilson up front. Bournemouth made two changes with Adam Smith and Ryan Christie coming in for Alex Jimenez and Tyler Adams.

Bournemouth kicked off the first half defending the Putney End. Fulham started in a lively fashion and took the early play to Bournemouth with Emile Smith Rowe and Samuel Chukwueze causing the Cherries defence problems. Bournemouth were in 6th spot with a chance of Europa League or Europa Conference League chances come the end of May.

Rayan came forward in the 19th minute and forced a corner off Antoine Robinson in the 20th minute with the corner taken by Marcus Tavernier but it came to nothing as Calvin Bassey headed the cross clear.

Ryan Christie came forward for Bournemouth in the 32nd minute but his left footed shot was blocked by Joachim Andersen for the home side. Fulham came forward through Robinson down the left flank but his cross into the six yard box aimed for Rodrigo Muniz was intercepted by Marcos Senesi and put out for a corner. The resultant corner for Fulham came to nothing as Bournemouth defended the ball away from danger quickly.

Bournemouth Ryan Christie was yellow carded in the 39th minute for a foul on Timothy Castagne. The foul was checked for a red card with VAR and referee Andrew Madley upgraded the original decision to a red card and sent Christie off in the 41st minute. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola immediately replaced Evanilson with Tyler Adams in the 43rd minute after the sending off.

From the free kick taken by Tom Cairney, big centre half Joachim Anderson headed against the cross bar which was a let off for Bournemouth who were then down to ten men for the remainder of the match. In the 45th+3 minute Saka Lukic saw a long range right footed shot saved by Djordie Petrovic which was Fulham's best chance of the game so far. Bad foul by Joachim Andersen on Adrien Truffert went from yellow card to a red card after a VAR decision by referee Andrew Madley.

The teams went in level at 0-0 at half time. Fulham manager Marco Silva brought Issa Diop on for Emile Smith Rowe in the 46th minute.

Fulham kicked off the second half with score still level at 0-0 but both sides down to ten men each. Bournemouth came forward on a fast counter attack in the 47th minute and Adrien Truffert saw a left footed shot from 22 yards out saved by Bernd Leno. Rodrigo Muniz was yellow carded for a shirt tug on Marcos Senesi in the 50th minute.

Bournemouth went close to scoring in the 51st minute when Junior Kroupi fired a right footed shot against the cross bar as the Cherries started to look the more likely to open the scoring.

With Bournemouth's next attack the visitors went 1-0 up as Rayan fired home with a left footed shot in the 53rd minute from outside the Fulham penalty area from an assist by captain Adam Smith to send the Cherries fans behind the goal into full voice.

Fulham Sasa Lukic was yellow carded in 59th minute. Fulham made a double substitution in the 62nd minute with Harry Wilson and Samuel Chukwueze replaced by Kevin and Oscar Bobb in the 62nd minute.

Marcos Senesi was yellow carded in the 65th minute for kicking the ball away. Oscar Bobb had two great left footed shot after coming on but he was denied both times by a shot over the cross bar into the Hammersmith End and another effort blocked by a Bournemouth defender.

Kevin saw a right-footed shot from 15 yards out tipped over the cross bar by Djordie Petrovic in the 74th minute.

Fulham made another substitution in the 75th minute with Josh King coming on for Tom Cairney. Antonee Robinson yellow card in 77th minute for bad foul.

Bournemouth made a treble substitution with Marcus Tavernier, Rayan and Junior Kroupi for Amine Adil, David Brooks and Enes Unal in the 78th and 79th minutes. King yellow carded in 82nd minute for Fulham.

Fulham replaced Timothy Castagne with Kusi-Asare in the 83rd minute as manager Marco Silva rolled the dice for the last time two try and get back into the game late on. Alex Scott was replaced by Alex Toth in the 90th minute for Bournemouth. In the 90th+4 minute Bobb fired a right footed shot against the underside of the cross bar and Bournemouth somehow kept the ball out. Adil was yellow carded in 90th+5 minute.

Bournemouth deserved the victory at Craven Cottage they are very much an accomplished Premier League club that have played above themselves this season and deserve a pop at a European competition in 2026-27 under a new manager.
