The Story of the Match
Ipswich Town moved closer to the automatic promotion places with a deserved 2-0 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road in front of 18,249 supporters. Goals in either half from Sindre Walle Egeli and substitute George Hirst secured the points for the visitors from Suffolk.
Watford hosted promotion hopefuls Ipswich after a mixed run of results, while Kieran McKenna's side arrived looking to rediscover momentum. Backed by a sell-out travelling support, Ipswich began brightly and controlled midfield for long periods of the opening half.
The breakthrough came in the 37th minute. Marcelino Núñez's free-kick was deflected into the path of Walle Egeli, who calmly fired a left-footed effort into the far corner to give Ipswich a deserved lead at the interval.
Watford attempted to respond after the break, introducing fresh legs and showing greater attacking intent. James Abankwah went close from close range before Mamadou Doumbia was introduced to add impetus up front. Despite spells of pressure, the Hornets struggled to find a decisive opening against a well-organised Ipswich defence.
Ipswich made key changes midway through the second half and struck again soon afterwards. Within minutes of coming on, Hirst doubled the lead in the 77th minute to effectively end Watford's hopes of a comeback.
The home side were handed a late lifeline when Eduardo Bove was bundled over in the box. However, Tom Ince's penalty was superbly saved by Christian Walton, diving low to his left to preserve Ipswich's clean sheet. The visitors saw out the closing stages comfortably to secure a comfortable away victory.
